Furry Dungeons & Fluffy Dragons: Lizanne, the student
In the Dungeons and Dragons game that Inkwolf is currently running, Lizanne is the character that he has created for himself. Being the main DM, he does not get to play her very often. Mostly she is a very passive part of the plot, accomanying the group as an NPC rather than an active party member. However, since they sometimes switch around and have other players take the DM seat, that is when Lizanne will spring into action and help the party out.
Lizanne currently is a level 6 character, with 4 levels of wizard and 2 levels of rogue. Being a student of wizardry at the arcane university of Alitia, she is very knowledgeble, especially in the fields of magic and history. But being physically fit on top of that, she has some experience with dungeon delving expecitions as well, helping out her professors securing ancient artifacts. As a assistance in those expeditions, she learned using thieves tools to pick locks and disarm traps. She is also quick on her feet and has a high constitution, making her a lot more sturdy than most wizards.
However, her high endurance comes at the price of her magic not being quite as powerfull as that of her peers. Not beng specialized as much as most player characters, she doesn't hit quite as hard as wizards of her level usually would. Her spells are suited mostly for utility and information-gathering rather than combat effectiveness. Also, Lizanne is suffering from a condition called Diviners Dissorder, which often causes her to see present, past and future at the same time, which makes social interactions or just basic perception of the world around her a challenge.
Lizanne is a very rational person who needs logic and mathematics to make sense of the world around her. Even though she is very chummy and energetic, she has a hard time really understanding people and their actions. But she does love mechanics and even was involved in engineering a ship-motor that can make ships sail on land. As a consequence of that, casting her spells often involves some kind of mechanical element, like her summoning up spectral cog-gears, clockworks and formulas which channel the magic energies into her spells. Every magic user somehow needs to channel their magic energy into a form that they can understand to make their spells work, and physics is just what Lizanne can relate to the most.
During the games, Lizanne often takes the role of comic relief. Her blantant misunderstanding of people's emotions and her unwanted insights into the future can lead to some really awkward misunderstandings. But she is also a very flexible character with a lot of tools at her disposal to come up with creative solutions for problems, even if she does not overly excell in any particular field.

Thank you very much! Yeah, particularly in 5th edition, there are a lot of Charisma-or Wisdom-based casting classes. For most classes, magic is either some kind of natural gift or something that comes from a higher deity. That's what I found so fascinating about the wizard-class. They are the only Intelligence-based casting class out of the base game, and the only ones who really learn magic by understanding the physical nature of it. I really liked that about the class, and wanted to add a bit of artifact-hunting and dungeon-delving expertise to it (hence the two levels of rogue). Lizanne is a total nerd too, which is extra fun in a medival fantasy setting.
I've yet to play 5th edition; have a hard time getting into any system really. Seems I don't know the right people or places to look. The one thing I've not really liked about Wizards is that most system kinda gloss over the learning of magic past reading magical tomes, reciting magical phrases, and mastering the proper gestures. It seems rarely described as an actual understanding of what rules govern the nature of magic to be able to learn, harness, and use it in a way akin to the scientific method or one understanding and utilizing the rules of physics and other scientific principals. I, personally, like seeing magic integrated into a setting as branch of science that is simply less understood than fields such as physics and biology, but is at least understood enough to be practically used.
Finding a group can be very hard indeed, especially when you are looking locally. It can be easier if you look online though, since there's a lot more interested people around, and by now there's a lot of tools to make playing online easy as well. I really wouldn't have expected to be playing fantasy-role-playing-games with a group of friends from the BDSM-part of the furry scene a few years prior either.
But yeah, you are right, the actualphysics of magic are rarely ever touched on in the officiallore, as I can tell. Not that I use the official lore much... Part of that probably is that D&D has more than one official setting, like Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Planescape... all of which handle magic slightly differently. I guess filling in those details is part of role-playing a wizard. It's kind of nice to have that freedm to fill in the flavour of it yourself, I think.
