Hey Amy. If you head back to any of the spotlight journals you'll notice in the rules/fine print section that the spotlight host is allowed to use FA's search feature for songs.
[See: "Posting your song on this journal guarantees I give it a listen. It does not, however, get priority over other songs that are not posted here"]
While the spotlight host prioritizes songs submitted to the spotlight journal they can pick any song submitted to FA, so long as it's less than two weeks old on selection date.
You'll see non-journal songs selected when enough submissions on the journal don't qualify, or the pool is too small. Qualification does not mean 'professional music only'. Here are some requirements for the songs to qualify. Guidelines can expand to include...
Songs without 30 second PG features
Songs over two weeks old
Songs submitted by musicians who already had one of their songs spotlighted in the recent two spotlights
Seeing as this time of the year finds people very busy with end of semester workloads, the submissions are fewer, and those who are submitting are usually only the prolific, professional musicians who have been spotlighted recently because of those same qualities.
