Vanguard G - KazumaxChrono (GT M/M)
It feels like ages ago I wrote this part but only finalised it a couple of weeks ago.
Is the story better as a text doc or in the description box on here? Seen a couple do it the later way?
They have a default angst setting, so it's ended up as some type of angsty fluff in parts ^^;
Roughly an hour later, Taiyou had finally managed to round up Kazuma and Chrono, though it proved to be difficult to pull Chrono away from another potential Cardfight than it naturally should have been as the trio found themselves aimlessly walking around in the islands lush forest.
“Oi, pre-schooler, how far out do you want to go?”
“Taiyou you’re acting a bit strange, is something wrong? You can talk to us…”
Chrono finally spoke up confused; they had been walking what felt like forever in silence with nothing more than Taiyou saying they needed a sort of team talk in private.
“I’m in middle school!” yelled Taiyou towards the instantly smug smirking Kazuma before sighing heavily; he fell for it again, Kazuma knew it was a trigger and he replied exactly as he wanted once more, “besides, I’ll be starting High school after the holidays!”
“Hmm, you’re right; it’s back to reality after this.”
“I can’t believe High School is already over, it flew by so fast…”
“Well a lot did happen; it was non-stop ever since you roped me into the Under 20 with you.”
“Oh come on, you enjoyed it really, if you admitted it you didn’t regret a second!”
Chrono smugly reclaimed as he stared at the dark haired boy with that smug smirk that Kazuma had come to associate with Chrono knowing he was right about something and that he had nothing at his disposal to argue back with.
“Although, I could have done without the reminder, we’ll have to collect our results when we get back, I’m terrified that they won’t be good enough…”
“I’m sure you did great Chrono-san, you did study extra hard”
Taiyou chipped in, trying to boost the spirits of the older boy to some minor success as Chrono smiled back, mumbling quick thanks.
“You shouldn’t have been so stubborn and have just let me help you study; we were taking the same exams after all”
“No! If I want to do it, I got to do it myself, besides, if I partnered up as a study buddy with you, all I’d be able to think about is Cardfighting you instead!”
The red head debated back with a heavy sigh, not catching his poor choice of words as the dark haired counterpart turned away quickly, a slight dusting of red visible despite his denial. Partners…Kazuma had to admit he liked the sound of that but not in the context Chrono made it sound, could he possibly even see him as more than a school buddy or team mate?
“As for Chrono-san’s question…I guess here is as good a place as any…”
Taiyou spoke up once more, interrupting another of the duo’s “disagreements”. Looking around, this part of the forest looked nothing different to every other part of the forest the trio had been through so far, aside from the couple of boulders that could be used as convenient seats.
“Go on then Taiyou, what is it?”
Chrono asked reassuringly as he took a seat on the nearest bolder, which Kazuma walked over to lean on the one behind, eyes fixed on the younger boy.
“Chrono-san, Kazuma-san, I want to thank you for everything, we’ve been amazing as Team Striders, we even successfully defended the title! I’ve learnt so much from being a part of this team!”
“Bbbbuuuutttt….”
Kazuma interjected, trying to hurry the younger boy along with a gesture of his hand as Taiyou started to fidget with the tassels of his jacket before finally returning eye contact to the other two boys.
“I won’t be going to the next Under 20 as part of Team Striders! I just wanted you to know that I’m quitting the team!”
“Oh…interesting.”
“I’m not surprised, you want to form your own team don’t you Taiyou and see how far you can go?”
“As well as to test himself against you Twirly-head on an even field.”
“Huh? Is that true Taiyou? You could challenge me to a Cardfight anytime, I wouldn’t have minded and if you wanted a serious fight, all you just had to do was say.”
“Your telling me, you seriously never noticed how he looks at you when you Cardfight? It wouldn’t have been what the Pre-schooler was after, would it now Taiyou?”
Taiyou was about to respond back at being called a pre-schooler by Kazuma, until he heard the older boy actually use his name, he was taking this seriously after all, and it wasn’t all banter. Eventually smiling at Kazuma, Taiyou nodded in agreement.
“Chrono-san, I want to challenge you on an even playing field, as an equal to test my skills against yours, to see how far I’ve come, to see if I have the skills to beat you…Chrono-san, for me, you are the bar to surpass and the Under 20 is the place to do it!”
Chrono’s serious expression didn’t shift as he listened carefully to Taiyou’s earnest words; the youngest member of their team had come so far since he had first met him back during the mess at the United Sanctuary branch. The Gold Paladin user was visibly nervous, it felt like Chrono was staring a hole right through him.
“I don’t want you to think I’m turning my back on the team or anything, I’ll still help with events and such for the first year! I just…”
“It’s ok Taiyou, you don’t have to explain yourself, I understand perfectly.”
Chrono finally smiled as he got up and walked over to the younger boy, placing both hands on his shoulders.
“You’re still young, it makes sense you want to branch out and test your limits, after all Try3 went their separate ways, all taking different paths, so just because you leave the team, doesn’t change anything between us or with Team Striders, you’re welcome anytime Taiyou!”
“Chrono-san..I”
“Heh, I guess the next time we’ll see you, we’ll be rivals but don’t think we’ll go easy on you, just because you’re a former team mate!”
Kazuma smirked as he ruffled up the smaller boy’s hair, much to his grievance but still managed to smile back regardless
“Kazuma-san…I, I thought…”
“Thought what, that we would be mad at you?”
“Taiyou, I’ve already said, I understand and I mean it, after all, the next Under20 will likely be our last one, so why shouldn’t we go out with a bang, I’ll see you and your team in the finals? Yet that’s then, let’s focus on the now… Starting with figuring out where we are, do either of you recognise this spot?”
Both Taiyou and Kazuma looked at the red head dumbfounded, that serious air just poof to nothing; was he actually unable to read the situation or was it just something else? Physically face palming the response, Kazuma sighed heavily before finally looking around.
“Nope, this forest all looks the same, more trees, more bushes, more shades of green…” the dark haired boy sarcastically added taking his hand and brushing it back up into his hair,
“I’m sorry, I was so lost in thought; I wasn’t paying attention to where we were going…”
“Forget about, it’s an island, just pick a direction and go straight, we should hit the beach again soon enough”
“Easy enough, we can’t be that far from the coastline, we’ve been wandering around a while now”
The red head added as he jumped back onto the boulder from before, to climb onto the larger one behind it to scan the area and decide which way to go. After a few moments, Chrono pointed in a rough South West direction, indicating his decision as he walked pass them casually, if they didn’t know him better, you would think Chrono was just being dense but both them could easily wager that despite what he said, the red headed teen was disheartened by the news, on top of High School coming to end and everyone going their own way once more his insecurity of losing everyone again was evident and he was probably worried it would all unravel just like it did when Try3 separated.
Taiyou and Kazuma were left to simply stare at each other, the two sighing heavily in disbelief as they followed suite; for now, perhaps it was just best to leave him to his own things and humour him on his temporary distraction. After all, they could clear up any misunderstandings when they got back.
The trio hadn’t been walking for much more than fifteen minutes or so before Kazuma almost went crashing into Chrono, the red headed boy, looking at something curiously in the bushes. For his sake, it better not be another snake. As the other two gathered round, curious to what had their team leader so mesmerised, they were caught off guard as he spun on heel, startling them both.
“Hey, what do you think these are? They look like berries but…”
“Are you sure Chrono-san, they look like they could be a type of flower by the way they are laid out…”
And on that thought, Chrono simply picked up a lone small branch of oddly alternating colourful berries and crushed a single one between his fingers.
“Yup, definitely a berry, they look a bit like the bignay berries Mikuru-san has but they’re the wrong colour? And texture for that matter…”
“Likely just a regional variant, now can we go, the others will be wondering where we got to at this rate!”
“Dare you to try some!?”
Kazuma casually flinched at that statement, glancing over in Chrono’s direction before facing him entirely as unimpressed met smugness, while Chrono waved one branch of the berries at the dark haired boy, a second one now sitting in his other hand.
“Count me out, anything that many colour can’t be safe for you… they may not even be ripe, you’ll just make yourselves ill!”
Taiyou tried desperately to make them see sense but the look in their eyes suggested otherwise, the challenge had been laid down, with neither backing down. Sighing at these antics kicking off once more, the younger boy left them to it as he begun to walk off to get a new survey of the area; he was the youngest member of the trio and yet those two had a way of making him feel like he was the mature, grounded one…why did they always have to be like this, the two were so similar at times it was unnerving, like they were two halves of the same coin…or some type of light and dark twins?
“Tell you what; I’ll try them as well if you’re afraid of taking a chance…”
“As if! You’re on, give it here!” Kazuma bluntly stated, snatching the branch out of the others hand.
“Alright then, on three!” Chrono smugly added as he picked all the berries off and placed them into the palm of his hand, with Kazuma repeating the same action.
“One….”
“Two…”
“Three!”
With that call both boys in sync threw back their heads to scoff the bunch in one sitting as Kazuma mentally kicked himself for falling for the Twirly-hairs taunting once again, it was just like that stupid Curry House all over again… Chrono may be his team mate and perhaps he didn’t see it the same way but whether it was everyday hijinks or a Cardfight, Chrono was also a rival he just couldn’t bring himself to back down to; even when it was something as dumb and trivial as this.
“Eugh…talk about sweet, they were awful…” Sputtered Kazuma between coughs, trying to think of anything that could take the taste away
“Now I know you’re over reacting, they weren’t that bad and your still standing see nothing to worry about!”
“For now… give it an hour or two and then we’ll see…”
“Chrono-san! Kazuma-san! Over here, it’s one of those fruit trees from last time, these were delicious, we should take some back with us for the others!”
As Taiyou called out there names again back and forth, the two older boys eventually caught up with middle schooler standing at the foot of a large tree, he was right, they looked perfect!
“On second thoughts…” Chrono started, placing a hand on his stomach, nervously laughing, “how about we have them now, I’m famished….”
“What!?” came the team mates together as they looked at Chrono incredulity.
“Chrono-san… we ate just before we headed out, you can’t be that hungry?”
“I know, but… this feeling has just come out of nowhere, like I haven’t eaten anything in days…”
“Whatever, it can’t be helped, oi middle schooler throw one here!”
With a simple pass and catch, Kazuma reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a pocket knife with all the works. Whistling at the sight, Chrono was impressed as he sat down beside the other boy, no longer feeling like he even had the energy to stand.
“Where did you get that?”
“Pinched it off some no good street thug a while back…” a statement that sounded as bad a loud as it did in his head as he caught the other two staring at him uneasily “oh calm down, this was before I met you two, I saw it, I liked it, I figured I would have it, he was out cold, wasn’t like he had a use for it besides after last time, I wasn’t taking the chance in case Jaime was in charge of food…”
“That’s a relief, was worried you had fallen back into bad habits and that’s a fair call, good thing Jaime was taken off food duty this time, Kouji and Shion dealt with it.”
“You were worried about me? Why?”
“I always worry…umm, that is to say, I mean…you’re an important friend but you still come across so complacent sometimes, it can be difficult to know what you’re really thinking…”
Chrono tried to reply casually, nervously scratching the side of his cheek but the more he looked at Kazuma’s grateful expression the more flustered he became, before completely breaking eye contact and staring at a nearby rock, which had suddenly become a thousand times more interesting. From this angle, the dark haired boy couldn’t say for certain but he could have sworn Chrono was blushing faintly; reaching out to turn him round for a better look, the moment was ruined by the sound of his own stomach now rumbling.
“What happened to not being hungry?” teased the red head with a cheeky look on his face, quickly changing the topic of conversation.
“I…uh…shut up… I wasn’t or I didn’t think I was?” Kazuma stated confused, he could feel his face getting warm from the embarrassment as he placed a hand on his stomach momentarily, “so bizarre, suddenly it feels like I haven’t eaten anything all week, what gives?”
“That’s exactly how I feel…! Let’s see if we can resolve that. Taiyou! We’re going to need a lot more of that fruit, bring as much as you can find!”
There must have been about a dozen more pieces of fruit in the pile now by Kazuma along with about a dozen or more empty ones that the pair had already eaten and yet, the duo had still asked Taiyou to fetch some more, leaving the middle schooler struggling to comprehend how anyone could possibly be that hungry.
“Kazuma-san, catch!”
Taiyou shouted out from further in, throwing yet another two at the dark haired boy before taking a moment to sit down and rest by the tree, he was exhausted from going back and forth but as it was for their sake, he’d let it slide.
“Sorry about all this Taiyou! I… no WE owe you one!” Chrono called back over, waving at the younger lad who simply gave an exhausted smile in return.
“This seems so abnormal though… how this insatiable need to eat just came out of nowhere, look at all those empty skins, yet I still feel like I haven’t eaten a thing…it’s stupid”
“Mikuru-san always said I had a healthy appetite but I bet even this would surprise her…”
Chuckled the red head as he tried to lighten the mood between the two and the faint smirk from Kazuma suggested it may have worked. As the two continued their banter, an undetected change began to develop as the boys legs started to stretch out, spine lengthen faintly, while Kazuma was almost certain he felt his hand move, curving further round the fruit he held as well as the pocket knife but looking at his hands, it must have just been his imagination; quickly dismissing the moment.
“Is something wrong?”
“hmm…nah, no, it’s nothing”
“Well if you’re sure…”
“Now you’re the one over reacting, do you want another one or not…”
“Obviously! I’ll be sure to tell you when you can stop!”
“Oh, is that so Gear Chronicle Singularity, I’m not here to serve you reel it in or you don’t get any”
“Oi! Kazuma, come on! Be nice!”
Chrono contently smiled back at Kazuma’s teasing smirk as he glanced at the squirming red head through a single open eye. Finally surrendering to Chrono’s staring, Kazuma swiftly got back to work while Chrono watched him carefully, the dark haired boy using his hair to hide as much of his face as possible as he bit his lower lip, to distract himself from the creeping blush he could feel forming.
The pair of them really had got through a lot, so much so that Kazuma was clearly starting to get quite a knack for this, not to mention speed, and before the red head knew it another one was cut open and served in front of him.
Sometime later and many scattered fruit shells, Kazuma and Chrono fell back against each other, hands resting on their stomachs in perfect sync as they finally felt quite satisfied and the pain of starvation subsided, along with being oblivious to the look of horror on Taiyou’s face.
Between them, the pair must have at least eaten twenty or so whole fruits each, though if he was honest he stopped counting once he got to the high teens and two bare trees. On top of everything else, the longer he stared at the two older boys, the more something felt off, something different, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on; then again maybe he was just too exhausted after all that leg work or maybe had simply been out in the sun too long and his mind was playing tricks on him. In spite of everything, the trio had been gone a lot longer than any one probably first thought they would.
It feels like ages ago I wrote this part but only finalised it a couple of weeks ago.
Is the story better as a text doc or in the description box on here? Seen a couple do it the later way?
