As well as three weeks worth on book three, I was thinking of cleaning up Cha-Kat-s and Ides to be the first of the 'pre-Folly' books and I had been trying to get my 'cast' pages up to date.

I had the same thing happen to one chapter I was working on... All gone in a flash by hitting ONE button and no way to recover it.

If the surfaces of the disks haven't been damaged, it's possible -- but expensive.

1) Is there anything on that drive that you would be afraid the government to see?

2) If not, there may be a geek specialist nearby to you that can do that work. Move your disc into a new drive, or do a recovery into a new drive. Possibly an exterior hard drive. That would get your data and give you a backup.

Mine cost about three times the price of the drive. But I felt it was worth it.

Not really, but the cost is well over my budget. (and over what I've made selling ebooks to date. )

Too bad about the netbook drive... Spinrite might be able to recover some of the data, but it sounds like it's pretty bad.

I've just loaded a few things on the workstation so far, I'm not going to load 'everything' on it like I did on my old system (I could never find anything in the mess!)

Now the crash has Happend-
Is it a crash of the HD Hardware(Electronic?), Headcrash or Dir System?
i have recovert a lot of my data out of a electronic crash. You have to get the same type of type of HD and swap the electronic! in 90 to 95% it Works. Use linux(live Disks) based tools. they are a lot better than win based and ther are a lot tutorials arround. If you get access, DON´t backup the whole thing, pick what you need. A complete backup out of a damaged HD could crash easily. Hook the HD to recover via ide/sata to USB converter to your Work System.
Headcrasch...... there is a very hard thing you could do yourself if you are a nimbel mechanic and the HD is a One Platter HD. I have it done two time, both times with sucsess.
-Get same type of HD
-Open first the Crashed HD are there scratches on inner ring of the platter thats bad. Other loations... not so
-Disassamble both and Swap platters.
-Assamble.
-try out..... Good Luck
Ahh, the dust problem with HD´s.....
Do the whole thing in your bathroom After you have had a LOOONG shower. After it the air is nearly dustfree...

Beside the datarecovery..
I´m using backgrund sync tools. There are a lot good freeware arround. In daily use there is a mini USB stick(16GB) in a port of my lappy. Weekly sync to a external HD.
Think about it..

Yeow! I've had drives fail with style, one shot fragments through the guts of its tower... It, the PSU and main board looked like someone used steel scattershot on them. Thankfully, none of it left the case!

Sorry about hearing that your netbook was attacked by "Murphy" hope things get better soon.

Also looking at that pic makes me think about Deep Purple's song Space Trucking, but with Cougar instead of Trucking being sung. ;3
