Well here be a color version of my Wagon Top Boiler 2-8-0 in Empire River & Western dress. NOTE! The boiler is NOT Russian Iron but a painted jacket. I think it looks really good for this scheme.
Anyway assencialy this is the paint scheme for my E.R.&.W. RR. Though this is an earlier version. The older the locomotive the more ornate the scheme becomes, at least in terms of Brass and Livery. I'm still working the Bowker version and hopefully will be able to post it soon. And after seeing what this concept looks like in color, this is a Kit Bash project that I MUST persue!!!
COMMENT IF YOU FAVE!!!
PS: Again, sorry about the image distortion. If I can I'll replace the image with a better one.

A "Wagon Top" boiler is named so because of its shape. It you noticed, the boiler is of a wider diamiter near where the Firebox is and then Narrows/tapers in the middle as it moves towards the front of the locomotive. The shape resembles a Covered Wagon hence the name, at least so I've been told.
This boiler style was WIDELY used durring the middle part of the 19th Century up to nearly the 1900's! Some engines with this boiler type were kept in service up into the 40's in regular service. The Wagon Top Boiler is iconic for almost all steam locomotives used in the Old or "Wild West". Even locomotives built as late as 1891 had them, for example the Sierra Railroad's #3. A very famous locomotive and movie star! The engine has been used in many TV Shows like Pettycoat Junction, Green Acers, and Little House on the Prarie. Also the engine has been used in movies such as "Back To The Future 3", Unforgiven, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again.
It was around the Turn of the Century that the design fell out of favor for Larger "Strait Boilers", which are just as the name implies. A Large Boiler that is strait, and example beign my HO scale 2-8-0 Locomotive #772.
