Originally the lackey of a dragon, Vulkan took the time to learning how to and reading the dragons books between his sessions. A particular experiment for a mix of sulfur, carbon and saltpeter caught his eye and he attempted to make a batch. Vulkan was cast out after an large batch experiment of his went awry by an errant drip of lava and accidentally introduced magma to his master's chamber. Needless to say, the dragon was upset that his hoard was now in ruins and banished Vulkan from his cave. He now wanders the land experimenting and sneaking into mage's libraries, continuing to expand his capabilities.
