I think one way I've been able to cope with clashing colors has been to unite them in some way -- usually I will add some sort of tint wash over the whole piece that then orients all the colors to be warm or cool for example. Of course, this depends on the commissioner being fine with colors not being reference sheet exact... which may take some convincing. @_@
