Free pie with every drink
I have a quick, intuitive method to get my shade colors but here's a different way of color picking; looking kinda looking to kirby dream land 3 overall, since the colors are the sort of pastel type I love. Using pink to shade white is a nice change even though I go to cool colors most instinctively.

Aseprite is just 10-15 dollars, It has a few things that suit pixel art in particular, an option to remove boxy edges and such so it works a bit more intuitively.
Some use mice, I had to get used to a tablet for safety of my wrists. It works though, to shape things out and I can effectively sketch with it like traditional art. After all the features are blocked in, I put in the rendering with my color and shading knowledge. I'm better at making palettes on the fly than premade ones it seems but overall spriting is about fine control and finding the effective cluster shapes to use for highlights and shadows.
