As Lynn Everett lays dying, a pair of Talwyn soldiers named Christopher Hartley and Kyle Simon arrive during the collapse of the city's defenses. They offer to take her someplace safe while there is still time. Though reluctant, the girl's mother advises her to go with them.

This is just heartbreaking. Poor Topaz. Seeing your city under siege is hard enough without having to watch your mother die in the process. At least there are people at hand who can look after her, but that has to be a horrifying experience for her. The artist has done a great job with capturing the emotion of the moment, and I'll have to admit that it made me tear up just a little.
This is definitely one of the definitive moments that shapes who she becomes as an older young woman. Topaz goes through a lot but she fortunately has Chris and Kyle to help her. I agree, the artist did a wonderful job, definitely one of those 'picture is worth a thousand words' moments.
I think this is why Topaz is one of my very favorites of your characters, second only to Lauren herself. She has a very complex and compelling story, and the fact that she can go through so much and come out the other side as the intelligent, compassionate and all around remarkable young woman she is makes her a really wonderful character all around. I'm so glad that she's had such lovely people to help her through the dark times in her life, as well. It hurts to see her at such a sad moment in her life, but these times are every bit as valuable in shaping who we are as the good times and I'd say this page owes every bit as much to your ability as a story-teller as it does to the artist's skills in capturing the essence of the moment.
Oh yes, it's always been part of Topaz's historical make up that she would have to grow up fast, but this version has really allowed me to flesh out her story and her brothers and really add the flesh to the bones as it were. Topaz understands loss and appreciating what you have for as long as you do, and from that she grows stronger.
As one of my oldest characters she's had a few backstory changes, but the core of who she is has always been the same.
I'm glad you like her so much!
