I thought of that, but any heavier the thing would be un wearable, and some of the gear armatures are tacked to the heart frame, so that would be an impossible thing to do, the other alternative would be to fill it with optical grade acrylic, but I have no way to heat that stuff without it bubbling. I may have to use "faux water" like stuff from a taxidermy supply shop.
the problem is the armatures that are soldered to the heart, they're in the way and in order to put plastic there, the plastic would have lines cut through it to get it into place, and then there would be lines cut in it, and if I put the plastic in first it would be ruined when soldering because of the heat. :/
I think this should do nicely http://taxidermy.com/cat/18/artwater.html it'll fill and seal all the gears together in crystal clear acrylic.
What I might do is put folding legs in the sides of it, so it can fold out into a beetle, so if worn to something like Arisia, it could be used as part of a character outfit or something, and played with like a transformer toy lol

I was actually very disappointed with the steam punk scene when I went to Arisia this year, So much so that my cousin and I left the con within 5 hours of being there, originally anticipating staying through the 3 days of it.
Reason being, NO ONE knows how to do it, it's all people slapping welding goggles on top hats with clock parts glued to or sticking out of them, they mix cyberpunk and pirate genres with stupid things and call it Steampunk.
Nothing but a bunch of people in bad half assed costume and a sea of goggles.
It kind of made me sad in a way because it seems like Steampunk right off the bat had no direction, people are trying to incorporate it in their existing fandoms like the doctor who people, the furries and even starwars fans *I saw and cringed at a steam punk light saber made from a gold spray painted and taped plastic lightsaber from walmart.* and what's with all the friggin nerf guns covered in bad model paint jobs?
I've been so angry at the furries who just slap goggles on their fursuits and put a belt on with clock parts glued to it calling it steampunk. I am losing faith in the whole steampunk scene as a nice combination neo-Victorian elegance with clockwork wonders and ornate steam driven devices.
It's like everyone went to iParty and Micheal's Crafts and bought cheap top-hats and crappy ass peel and stick gear shapes, and battery operated clock parts and combined them to make a mockery of a potentially epic subculture.
It's very disheartening to see such crap people wear to the cons. I saw over 5 sets of goggles made from duct tape and tissue paper tubes...
This is not right.
I don't know if I even want to get into the whole thing because it's becoming more associated with bad cosplay and nerdy home bound geeks who try desperately to be cool and fail.

Oof, really? @___@
I've never seen a steampunk con.
Really, I don't think it should be that hard to make things look steampunk-esque if you put a little effort into it. Looking homemade and cobbled together can be an asset, if you do it right. These people... Did it wrong XD
I bet i could make a better-looking lightsabre for less than the cost of buying the toy he spraypainted >3>;;

It wasn't a steam punk con but they kinda took it over this year.
It was just so very annoying as none of the jewelry that was being sold there or anything had the nice real authentic look or feel to it.
Again I refer to the 10$ felt top hats from iparty with battery operated clock guts sticking out of them being sold for 40$.
I hated seeing that.
Especially with the stuff I have in my head that I wanted to make but didn't and decided not to bring. Next year I'm either not going to go, or go and redefine this damn subculture with full on costumes and wares.

Yeah, and all they did was poke a hole in a shitty top hat and stick the 5$ clock part though it and put its cheap plastic hands on it. STUPID.
Damn stupid. I was so upset because people were looking at it and picking it up going "OH WOW that, now that's totally steam punk, god I wish I brought more money." That was the moment I decided to grab my cousin and we were going home. lol.

naw it didnt hold up to the accidental drop test, so now it no longer ticks and is missing a couple armatures, but that's fine cuse for a hair piece or any functional jewelery, it prolly shouldn't anyway ^_^ Still thinking on filling it in with clear acrylic though to permanently bind it together, one more drop and i think its just gonna shatter, unless i solder everything or spot weld it all
yeah this thing was really just an experiment, the first thing we made that WORKED lol, then it was on the edge of the top hat just resting there and the cat knocked the whole head over, and well, there were gears in the rug and the main spring pin broke so it was pretty much done at that point.
Shit happens and we learn lol.
The head also is missing its nose now, surprised it didnt explode when it hit just the nose popped into powder... weird lol

Would need to get more parts, My cousin and I made it for his girlfriend at the time, but she didn't take it and its lost somewhere in his room.
This image has been repeatedly used and is even printed on cloth now and sold at steampunk cons, its flattering and annoying lol.
If we had the material to make another one we would, just haven't had interest or drive to do it lately
