Looking back on my life now I've done a lot of things. Some good and smart and others just plain stupid. I should probably just start from the beginning. It was so long ago now it is like a distant dream. The memories faded, fuzzy and disappearing around the corners like a much too old painting. I was born on Mountain Savage in a little crack on the side of a big mountain.
Theos opened his eyes for the first time. Or so he thought for he was finally free of the darkness that had surrounded him. A shattered shell littering the rocks and pieces falling away down the slope. They were like tiny pebbles and so was he.
He looked around the darkness had given away to more darkness. It was lighter however and he looked up seeing dozens of little lights hanging above him motionless. Along was large moons that made his eyes go wide in wonder. He rested there just starting at them wondering what they were.....wondering what he was.
Theos slid forward his body squishing between the rocks and dipping with them. He was a liquid almost without any organs or bones. It was just what he was. It didn't feel odd or unnatural but normal. Though in truth he wouldn't be able to define normal if one asked. So there he was just sliding his way around without any idea what to do. It took him a long time but he eventually wandered into a gathering of nests. The feathers stuck to his form and eventually he stopped moving. He was tired and oddly enough not hungry. He huddled up on the outside of one of the nests and slept there.
The next morning he awoke to a large peering eye. Frozen stiff in fear he stayed stock still. The eye continued to stare unwavering from him. Eventually it blinked and bent over him. His gaze went under the bird and he watched one talon reach towards him. It wrapped around him easily and tried to pick him up. Theos leaked in between its claws making the bird squawk in surprise. It let him go and he plopped to the ground laying flat a moment before rounding again.
"Your no hatchling," a.....female voice said? "What are you? You better not be here to harm our babies," it continued to say glaring at him. He remained as quiet as could be his body shaking slightly.
"What is the ruckus," another voice said. A second bird coming into view. They looked the same to Theos. Both with red feathers and beaks with teeth.
"We have a trespasser is what," the female said causing the other to look to Theos. Green eyes examined him. I only remember they are green because at the time I thought they were beautiful. They contrasted the red feathers, grey mountains and blue sky. I had yet to see that color and I found it oddly calming.
"It is simply a hatchling," the second one said. "Of what kind I do not know but it has done no harm," she said pushing her way slightly closer to him her eyes almost coming to level with him if it wasn't for her beak.
"Where are your parents young one," she spoke softly and calmly unlike the other one. Theos stopped shaking in wonder a bit. He tried to talk but just bubbled instead. He had no mouth and no way to communicate. He sunk down slightly. He didn't know what parents were but if he had any he had never seen them.
"I see," she said straightening and towering over Theos. I met her again after I left the mountain. By that time I was full grown and I realized she is actually rather short for her species. I was so small however it was like I was a pebble faced against a mountain. She was a kind and gentle giant however. I do not doubt she is dead now but goodness knows she had plenty of children.
"An abandoned child looking for a home shouldn't be turned away," she said looking to her rival in this.
"You want it you take it. Get it away from my nest," she huffed shooing them both away.
Theos followed the more beautiful and kinder bird. Eager to get away from the loud rude one. He stayed at her heel......as much as he could. One of her steps was easily five maybe ten times his body length. He couldn't move nearly fast enough. Though she seemed to be taking it slow and he was able to remain in her shadow. His gaze went to those around them. Several peering eyes and cocked heads staring at him. He began shaking once more.
"I won't let you into my nest mind you," a voice said from in front of him. "You are not one of my hatchlings. However I am a mother first and any child I see who is going hungry just wounds my heart," she said stepping into a nest. Theos looked up at her stopping just outside the weaved wood and stone construct.
Eventually another bird appeared its golden form shining in the light of the sunset. In its talons a wounded digimon that seemed to fade in and out. Dozens of chirping noises rose from within and the digimon was thrown in. The chirps quieted and while Theos couldn't see he could definitely hear the cries of the digimon. The sounds of tearing flesh and eventually nothing. A bloodied piece of bone and meat got dropped over the edge in front of him. The golden bird eyeing him a moment.....if it had eyes. It disappeared back over the rim leaving Theos to eat.
Theos looked at the piece. It was slowly disappearing....this was the first time he had seen blood. His body churned like he was feeling something that wasn't there. It scared him. He wasn't really that hungry but they were being kind. Eventually Theos closed his eyes and approached it. His body flowing over it and catching the bone inside. He stayed there and absorbed it. He felt his mass grow a bit. Like the extra data had made him larger....and smarter.
He finally knew what those lights were. They were stars and the large ball at day was a sun. Yes he had learned just a little. He stayed there thinking it wasn't so bad. It wasn't so bad to kill for food to eat the flesh of another. That was because he had no bonds yet. No reason not to kill. He didn't understand emotions, ties or bonds, he didn't think what about that digimons family. The word was still foreign to him. Family was a concept in the back of his mind. No to him it was simply surviving.
"To bed with you young ones," a male voice spoke. Chirps of protest rang out over the rim.
"I shall tell you all a story," the female one spoke. The chirps tone became happy once more and a chuckle could be heard. "Once upon a moonlit sky. There lived a giant bird who made its home on the tallest peak in the world. It's wing beats made the wind itself and when it took flight storms follow with whipping winds. It always returned to that mountain after felling many trees for many hours. Many did not like the bird. Its winds damaged their homes and they wanted to do something about it.
"So one day while the bird was away a brave digimon named Apollomon climbed the tallest peak. There he lay in wait til the bird returned. Once it fell asleep he took the orb from above his head and tied the birds tail feathers around it. He fled before it awoke and awoke it did. Its screech shaking the mountain. It took flight with the orb its weight slowing the bird down and its light shining in the sky.
"The once raging winds became gentle gusts and the orb was renamed the sun. Every day the bird drags the sun across the sky causing gentle breezes. Though sometimes when it is truly angry it will still fall trees in rebellion for the digimon who forces it to carry the sun," she finally finished. "Now to sleep with you."
Theos couldn't see them after that. But the story had left him looking up til he couldn't stay awake anymore. Eventually he fell into a fitful slumber.
I stayed there for several years after that. I grew up there became a child level among those nests. It was a simpler time and enjoyable. I heard dozens of folk tales just like that. Some from her and others from the storytellers of the mountain. I will tell you more tomorrow young one. For now my throat is dry from talking so much I must go rest.
