A story that I was writing for
PillowsandSnacks for a trade. Will complete in due time.
Coby could not believe just how much Matthew had messed up.
Dark Pact: A unforgiving roguelike adventure was developed by TheRogueTeam, a four-person development house. Programmers: Coby Foley and Matthew Birch. Sound and music: Veronica Chambers. Artwork: Diane Mellow. Developed with the Unity Engine, it’s a simple but in-depth RPG in the vain of text based roguelikes like Angband and Brogue. Late alpha stage, going into beta.
Testing the game to check if the build is stable, Cody was horrified to find out that without telling anyone, Matthew had re-scaled the stats for the final boss. Too difficult to beat. Too much health and damage.
Deeply frustrated, he started recording a voice message to Veronica. “V, he changed the boss stats. Again. The boss is too hard, the health and damage multipliers are skyrocketing to oblivion. The only way for the player to beat him is through arbitrated grinding. I don’t have to go in depth as why that’s a horrible idea. Wait a second.”
Coby rummaged through the game files, checking the stats of all stage bosses. His mouth gaped open in complete utter shock.
“He changed the stats for all bosses!”
Cody loaded up a boss and selected a pre-made character to fight him. “The boss is using too many ultimates. Can we fire Matt? No acceleration specified, you’re under arrest shitfucker! Hmmm… these aren’t the proper attacks. Fire Matt immediately! Something’s wrong in the state of Denmark.” The boss defeated him in a few seconds. He loaded up another pre-made character. This one had the best items and highest level in the character pool.
“Too many soft spots on the Reverent. Now how, and I mean how in the hell did this happen? Matt, that’s why it happened. He’s spamming World on Fire! The boss is spamming! Soft spots. Soft eyes. Fire Matt, then preferably, kick him in the nuts.
He picked another boss. “Fire Matt. He fucked up the Necromancer build. Spawn skeletons. Spawn zombies. I think what went through this guy’s head was that the best way to make a boss difficult is to make him spam his most annoying skills. If the guy wanted to add a sense of challenge, guess what? He missed it. Point blank miss. Shot in the dark. Kick him in the nuts first.”
He opened the boss ability list. “He deleted the abilities! What the hell? Not deleted but he replaced them with the same skill and set the random ability chance for the skill to 65. No wonder the bosses are spamming it’s the only thing they can do. Fire matt. It’s going to take ages to reset them. Demote Matt immediately please!”
Out of a sudden, someone knocked on his door. Cody stopped recording, took off his headset and shouted “It’s open!”
The door opened halfway, Cooper’s head poked out through the opening with a large smile plastered on his white furred face. “Hey bro. What’s with the temper?”
Cody hesitated at first, embarrassed to admit that he was having a temper tantrum. “I uh, its, It’s nothing. The other programmer guy I’m working with messed up some files and it’s going to take some time to fix it and I’ve got to release the game next weekend… I just, uh, had a small fit.”
“Mom and Dad could hear you downstairs.”
“Okay… so it was a big fit. Just tell them I had work.”
“Yeah…” Cooper stepped in and closed the door behind him. He was wearing his usual home attire, shorts, his favorite Mika shirt. “You know about the trials that are coming up?”
“Yeah, I do.” Said Coby, rummaging through the game files, taking note of all the changes Matthew had done to the game. “Were you going to compete or something?”
Cooper dived on his brother’s bed and buried his face in the pillow with his bushy snow tail wiggling. His left eye was poking out, looking at Coby. “Sure will. I need a coach though.”
“Isn’t Barnaby available?”
“It’s a competition, each candidate must have his own coach. Teachers aren’t allowed so that old bear Barnaby is going to have to sit it out.”
Matthew messed up not only the stats but the character bios. That jerk. Coby grit his teeth in frustration. He opened the group chat and started typing out the message.
“Matthew, I know you want to tinker with the game to suit your tastes. I understand that. But you must realize that if you set the game on normal and you decide to ubercharge the enemies, THE GAME ISN’T ON NORMAL ANYMORE. And if you change the character bios, I WILL FIND OUT. TELL US FIRST.”
Cooper turned on his back and started doing leg work on the bed. Glute Bridge Walkout. Extending legs upward, lifting the lower body all the way to the shoulder blades, creating a small bridge opening. His frame was thinner compared to the other swimmers in the Uni, but his muscles were firm and visible. He stared at Coby, wanting to see if he managed to grab his attention. The bed squeezed as he buried and unburied his feet from the mattress. Coby could see him from the corner of his eye but ignored him.
That’s how they were. Coby was small, dark and timid. Cooper was tall, white and outgoing. It’s hard to believe that these two are twins.
When he saw that his brother was ignoring him, Cooper stopped the exercises and sat on the edge of the bed. He started curling his toes in anticipation.
Cooper found the template he had created for the characters; he started re-writing the stats. His clicks and button presses sounded like a bad miniature avant-garde choir.
“I want you to be my coach.” Said Cooper.
The clicking and pressing ceased to a halt.
