Inspired by this scene from "Warrior's Sorrow":
A few moments later, Ranger came to a large open area. Over the entrance
hung a sign with the kanji for "water garden". As she entered, she then
noticed Combat standing near a row of holographic effigies. The effigy
Combat was standing right in front of was of a female shikoku dog with
long white hair in a braid, wearing a black domino mask, white kataginu
over a sky-blue long sleeve shirt, steel blue hakama, white tabi and
a pair of geta. "I know it's been a few years since I was last in Japan,
senpai," he said. "I've avoided it for so long. Wherever you are, I want
you to know, I am so, so sorry. I am so sorry and ashamed of how I acted
towards you, Yuna, and I know I can never make it up to--"
"Joseph?" Ranger said.
Combat briefly glanced back at Ranger and said, "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean
to hold everyone up. I just...I just had to be here."
"You want to talk about it?" she asked.
"Maybe," he sighed in reply.
Ranger then took note of another effigy: a male Shikotan vole in a
colorful robe. "This is the first Kotodama, right?"
"Yusuke's uncle Genjo," Combat explained, still looking at the Onna-
Bugeisha effigy. "He fell in battle with Sake."
After a moment of silence, Ranger said, "Toshi told us about Onna-
Bugeisha."
"Sometimes I wonder if Yuna's still out there, dead or alive. If she's
dead, can I help her rest in peace? If she's still alive, could I face
her, knowing how much I failed her?"
"How?" Ranger asked. "You know her death wasn't your fault, right?"
"But it *was* my fault that she died thinking I hated her."
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"Some time before we fought Baturax, I found out Yuna was involved with
Hagane. Romantically involved. I actually walked in on them kissing."
"Oh." She then noticed the holographic effigy to the right of Onna-
Bugeisha: a Japanese badger boar wearing a bandanna eye-mask decorated
like the Japanese flag, a formal kimono, hakama and kataginu. Rokuemon
Matsuki aka Hagane was one of Japan's greatest heroes. "This is him,
isn't it?"
Combat nodded. "I was angry because, of all the men in Japan, she chose
one who hated me. Not because of anything I did, but because I'm
American. By then, it had gotten slightly better between me and him, but
the damage had already been done. I felt betrayed and I lashed out at
Yuna like some spoiled brat. And then Baturax came."
"I see," she replied. "But you realized, it was her choice and life."
"Too late," he said, his voice breaking. "Now she's gone and I'll never
be able to tell her how sorry I was..." He then began to sob, "...tell
her how sorry I am."
Ranger came forward and held him. "I think Yuna would be proud of you
because you stuck up for people and you've also learned lessons that more
stubborn and arrogant people have refused to. And look what you yourself
have done as a teacher."
"I always tell myself that, if I followed in her example as a teacher,
I'd be honoring her."
"Look, we can't change the past," Ranger said. "All we can do is to learn
from it and not make the same mistakes in the here and now, as well as in
the future." Combat nodded in agreement.
