It was available in many flavors. The rub-down type you mentioned, clear plastic adhesive film that had to be carefully cut with an x-acto knife and stuck into place, and a paint-on chemical wash, where the tint pattern was pre-printed onto the drawing surface, and would only become visible after one of two types of developer were applied: one for dark tint and one for light tint.
