Oh my ego is definitely part of the problem, but look at it like this. Imagine you float through life sucking at everything and thinking you will never add up to anything, then one day you pick up a pencil and start drawing (Or in my case Maya and Photoshop) and discovered you are relatively ok at art. So you practice and practice until finally your art is worth talking about. People request free shit from you, but you dont care: it will get you recognised in hopes one day you'll actually get money from making art. Eventually you reach the point where you respect yourself enough to not take every request/trade you get. You even develop principles and rules.
Even though you put "I'm happy to art trade: but only if your abilities are on Par with/greater than mine:" on your wall and journals. You slowly start to realise "principles and rules" aren't going to put food on the table and keep the electricity running. So you're only left with 2 choices, go back to your shitty McDonalds job where you get to listen to obese people scream at you for accidentally giving them 2 big macs instead of 3 or you can suck it up and trade with the guy who looks like he draws in MsPaint with a rock and no understanding of anatomy, color theory, or perspective: but somehow somehow they have more watchers than you and you need that so hopefully one day somebody will commision you by proxy and you will have the money to buy ads. Yes I have an ego, but how nice do you think the art world is going to be to the guy who draws in MS paint and still thinks he's on my level? How big do you think their ego is?
The "Guy" I'm talking about isn't aimed at anyone in particular: because I've gladly traded with people who show potential to be great.
And yes, a good amount of this is my fault, I'm terrible at socialising, advertising, taking advantage of nepotism, and of course: my ego: but I've never failed a commissioner.
TL;DR
Art is the only thing I do right in my life, I deserve a little arrogance here and there; it's the one thing I can take pride in.
