I decided to doodle Tykaas sometime back for practice. Tykaas is a Tuul-tuul

Nah I can handle side profile easier than straight on actually. It's why I do more frontal facing. Although I usually do 3 quarter view. A lot of people don't understand I don't draw many long muzzled creatures. A lot of people do so it tends to be assumed. I prefer very short muzzled things and face shape wise lean more towards kemono. I've got some species whose faces are as flat as a mask.
i like characters with shorter muzzles but i get a lot of flack for it like is looks Sonic-like and so people say I'm not trying very hard. I think with my art style it's a little difficult to draw things with much depth perception at least on things as complicated as faces. saying that though I've improved greatly on hands and feet so limbs isn't a problem and that's good because most of my characters are human anyway. kinda the reason i like hoofed creatures really. those feet are very tricky to draw or at least to merge it between looking like the animal and looking like a human hand. short faces are a lot easier to make human-like expressions on. i often find it difficult to find art that has the expression i need as a reference for my own characters to copy onto. finding a human face with the expression is a lot easier but then having to extrapolate that over a face that's stretched out because of the muzzle sometimes makes it look like when the ghosts tried to make scary faces in the Betelgeuse movie. luckily i can mess around with the shading to hide how the expression doesn't match up the face. you've kinda done something similar in your avatar i see.
Ah yeah people do have opinions about sonic style for sure. But yeah that is a thing a lot of people will bring up. Ultimately I think it should come down to what you like though. I have to do that with mine a lot of the time. I "could" add more shading to add more depth you know, or outline parts of the muzzle or whatever. but I just like it better without. XD But that said everyone's personal preferences are going to vary of course, so that's why I think ultimately doing whatever appeals to yourself is perfectly fine. Some will ridicule it, doubtlessly, but I think that will be the case no matter what one does. People will always find "something" to take issue with. I do agree on the note of the shorter faces though, pulling off more human like expressions (and also exaggerated cartoony) can end up looking really bizarre on longer muzzled critters so you're forced to either change it to something that suits that shape better, or have stuff that looks like its twisted to different degrees, exceptions to the rule exists of course but just as a general, its what I've observed.
Funny story about Sonic/Sonic style. I actually can't draw it to save my life. I kind of wonder if the same would apply now or not, as I haven't tried in a long long time. I state its funny mostly because some people assume that A I'd either be good at it, or B, that it's what my work is derrived from. And interestingly enough I've drawn liiike a close friend's sonic OC a couple times, and maybe Tails once or so in my history but that's about it. Actually where my inspiration sort of trickled down from originally was megaman. XD and the cats from a specific Warriors book manga, and then just anime stuff in general but with liiike a mix of cartoony.
Anyway! Point in case, I personally rather like cel shaded stuff, and anime/cartoony/whatever you want to call what a lot of people might call "simpler" styles. Really that's not a fair term for them though, just because it doesn't have as many layers of shading doesn't automatically mean it's easier after all. Both require talent and knowledge to craft them in a way that looks nice for their purpose. I think I got utterly side tracked in my response there XD So if you can't find the train of thought, it's because I've been awake more than 24 hours and am starting to get dumb lol!
Oh also, I didn't actually make my icon, SEGSartwork did c= but yes they did use the shading to achieve the thing you mentioned.

i haven't slept well all week. my mom has been worrying about christmas since october and is still worrying about it. i've been awake since 3AM today and now it's nearly 1AM.
I can see the megaman influences in there but other than the hair i can't see the warriors. i tend to use vectors so i'm limited to cell shading even though i can airbrush well.
I'm kinda drunk on sleep deprivation right now and the tiny sip of wine i made for new year is hitting me like a freight train. so if i'm abnormally cheery that's why. so have a great dank year.
