To some extent… no, to too much of an extent, he'd gotten what he wished for: power. He could use it to protect himself and his friends, just as he wanted. However, he could barely stand up straight and struggled to walk, needing to use his arms to support himself like a gorilla. He could barely fit anywhere. He couldn't sit on furniture, hold any tools, sleep properly on a bed, wear much of anything, or really act like a civilized person. He couldn't grip his brother the way he used to. He received looks of fear or of perverted interest rather than acceptance as a normal person. Did something go wrong when he received his "boon", or was he paying a necessary price?… and either way, would he get the fulfillment that he thought power would bring despite the drawbacks? Should his goal be to find a way to return to the kobold he once was or perhaps shed some of the awkwardness from his new stature, or should he be trying to further his strength and size despite the costs?
Gargantua (Garg for short) is my character in DM
Bomba's Pathfinder campaign! Formerly Lank of Highfolk, a kobold sent on an adventure to fulfill a prophecy alongside others, Gargantua lives to protect his few friends. With his life and that of fellow adventurer Varg (once played by
Dragonien before being played by
Bomba) on the line while under a spell paralyzing them in front of enemy soldiers, another fellow adventurer, Jack (also played by Bomba), found that he could only save one of the two. Taking a risk, Jack either imbued a power upon Lank or awakened one already within him, mutating him into a tall and powerful but unwieldy monster that could shake off the spell and fight back. It was too little too late, however, as Varg was executed before the mutation completed and Lank could move again. Lank/Garg now finds himself stuck with more power than he'd asked for and anatomy that nobody seems to understand. He has taken on a new life and identity based on the first adjective used to describe him.
As of the time of this upload, Garg's in-game stats are:
Sorcerer (Custom Bloodline) Lv 3
STR 20
DEX 7
CON 10
INT 10
WIS 10
CHA 12
Skill specialties: Bluff, Intimidate, Perception, Sense Motive
Spell focus: Defense spells, transmutation spells focused on strength
As his mind wasn't changed during his transformation, Garg's trying hard to focus on the same things he wanted to develop as a kobold: social skills and mental and physical strength. While he expected to be an outcast due to his new appearance, he's been surprisingly accepted… but more as a curiosity than as a person, which gets under his skin (scales/hide?). Even if the transformation itself didn't alter his mind, dealing with his new body is influencing his personality gradually as he deals with the responsibility of using his power and the reactions others have to his form.
Why yes, he does look a lot like Thorn. I wonder what that's about?!
You can follow up on the latest events in the campaign as written by Lank/Garg here. Bomba and the players have been doing an absolutely amazing job making this much more than a by-the-numbers campaign and creating a web of relationships and plot that we all truly care about.
A big thanks to
