Matthew didn't answer, he was still in just his pajama pants.
"Hello?" The woman called again.
Matthew moved fast to get his clothes on.
"I'll be right back, I'm gonna go get staff to open the door." She called him, just as he was getting on his cross pedant.
He burst out the door "Wait, I'm fine!"
Just heading down the stairs was a hybrid anthro of a wolf and deer. She turned to face him showing some kind of orange face paint around her sapphire eyes. She walked up to him and moved her red hair out of her eyes, but it fell back down over one of them. "Are you sure?" I could hear you scream from my dorm, just across the hall."
"Curious.." Brian said on the wall behind this doe/wolfess "...She heard us from that far.."
"Well, I.." Matthew hesitated to talk to this stranger "It was nothing it just..."
"Look vulnerable, Lad." Lass whispered peeping form the window, "She cam when ye got hurt, and is still worried, Ya could ave a keepe"
"I.. I just fell out of bed is all." Matthew said "N-nothing serious.. I-it was just a nightmare..."
"Are you sure?" The hybrid asked "What if you have a concussion?"
"I'm sure I'll be alright..." He said "I-it's happened before.."
"Okay," She said still looking at the grey fox curiously "But that could be-"
"I'm Matthew." Matthew said, interrupting "A-are you new here?"
"Matt, Laddy, what are you doing?" Lass shouted as Matt and the girl "She's worried about ya because she likes ye. Le her worry for ye!"
"Call me Kari," the hybrid said as the hand shake finished "It's nice to meet you Matt."
"Matthew, please." he asked "A mat is what people step on and walk all over."
"Oh, I'm sorry." Kari said and her ears drew back "I didn't know.."
"It's just where I came from." he explained "I'm from Spokane, and haven't-"
"Matthew, Stop talking to her." Brian said "Right now, you should get away from this.. person."
Matthew paused and looked around the girl to his shadow, looking puzzled.
"Matthew?" Kari looked too, but only saw the shadows as an absence of some light on the wall. "Something wrong?"
"Brian, what's gotten into you?" Lass barked at him
"Just get away from Kari, now." Brian said "Give her an excuse then leave."
"I.. I'm sorry, Kari.." Matthew said, still looking at Brian. "I just remembered I have to get to a group study. They don't like me late."
She looked at him "Oh, could I come, You could show me around."
"N-no, I can't.. I'm sorry.." Matthew said then swiftly walked down the steps, and as he turned the corner he saw her looking with ears down and tail drooping.
Matthew stepped outside and took a deep breath, and then he growled at his shadow on the wall. "What the heck was that about, Brian? She was just trying to be nice!"
"Too nice." Brian said, "And far too convenient."
"How so?" Matthew asked as he kept glaring "She just check on me because she was scared."
"And she was the only one to?" Brian asked, "No one else did, or inspected further after you said you were fine? And How is she so calm around someone do awkward?"
Matthew just growled as his shadow insulted him in the last statement.
"What are ye gettin at lad?" Lass interrupted
"What if she's not real?" Brian said "What if she is just something Matthew hallucinated up?"
Matthew stopped and started to think.
"Yeah, she kind of fits too well now, doesn't she?" Brian said "Actually the more I think about it, don't some of the people on campus do the same way? Like our English professor?"
"What about our other friends?" Lass asked, and Matthew's heart sank "For all we know, this isn't a monster university."
