A Shadow is the suppressed self. Rarity's Shadow uses any means necessary to make others pamper her, work for her, even kill on her command. The real Rarity doesn't do this but has shown interest in having a personal servant in the episode where Spike believes he owes his life to Applejack so that's the base for this Shadow.
