What is "Serene Sea"?
What is "Sea Of Voices" project?
We are a team of ecologists, freedivers, and biologists working together with the members of the Marine mammal council (MMC) in Russia. We live by the Black Sea and carry out research on the local populations of dolphins and specialize in their acoustic repertoire and character of migration.
All three species of the Black Sea dolphins are listed in the Red Book, two of them are considered to be endangered. Just a few dozen years ago these animals have been massively killed: according to rough estimates, more than 6,5 million dolphins were killed by all the Black sea countries. Nowadays they are protected by international conventions, but, unfortunately, it appears these animals are not as safe as they should be.
Again and again, we find sick and dying dolphins, we come across dolphins caught in nets, perished in seiner trawls. It is no secret that people still catch dolphins illegally to sell to dolphinariums; to be honest, poaching is widespread in the Black Sea. There were dolphins killed by fishermen who tried to avoid their nets broken. Many of you probably heard about how the sick common dolphin washed up onto the shore and was brought to the dump although it was alive.
There are many more examples, and the situation seems to be really sad, if not catastrophic.
In view of that, we took a great step – we launched a crowdfunding project called "Sea Of Voices" ... -> http://serenesea.org/for_englishspeakers
