On my planet, avian people in general (like myself) are magically warded at youth just for this purpose (hiding wings). They essentially vanish into a pocket dimension attached to the marks/scarification that results. A major health concern that is to humans as natural as brushing teeth or showering is to unseal the wings to properly and regularly maintain them.
Not really; the sensation is like if a limb just dissolved away in front of you; thing gradually grows numb and then ceases to exist altogether. Kind of like when you sleep on your hand and in the morning you can't feel or move your fingers. The reverse is also true; the ward breaking feels like you regain sensation and control on said wing
Youg'uns need to be actively trained to overcome the phantom-limb instinctual response that comes out of this; the brain is simply not wired to handle this configuration (of a missing pair of limbs) and if the youngster continues to think or "feel" a phantom wing, the soul rejects the magic and poof wings come out.

Truth is : he never listens. You can be sure that most of the time, his wings are showed at full size. Well, as long as he's not roaming too far outside of the village it's not causing too much problem. XD
But yes, while reduced, wings become very easy to break, that's also why some strong cocoon made of magi is created to protect them from any harm. They have to break it every time they want to "grow" their wings, it can be compared to some hatching fight and sensation. And it's a tiring and uncomfortable feeling.
