Also, dont miss out on the excitment of conventions, where you'll either be completely ignored, or constantly beset by pedophiles dressed up as My Little Pony characters.

That still doesn't really negate how disturbing the thought of a bald swedish man with no mouth being raped by a man in a pony outfit with a samurai sword would be -- it just means the man doing the illicit act has His upper and lower brains dismembered by some kind of brain aneurysm during it.
Either way I blame the parents.

I'm honestly thankful...I didn't go that route then, I'm honestly terrified if I were to try now.
What good is a random rape threat? I mean I get it, anonymity of the internet an all but, shit.
So many people these days can trace IP's and from there, dig up your entire history through
social media. Is it REALLY safe to pull a stunt like that?

I've been to all of these. I drew a newspaper strip, and later adapted some of the characters from it into illustrated stories for TV. One of those characters, Captain Iceland, has 3 hardcover book collections under his belt. I still draw comicbooks, and now I'm actually making something pretty close to a living off my webcomic on Patreon.
And throughout all this, no-one has ever threatened to rape me. What's wrong? Am I ugly?

Funny thing is that I kind of miss those old school adventure newspaper strips, like Terry and the Pirates or Dick Tracy (even though I preferred to read them in collected trade or case-bounds).
But the thing is that whether in the 40s or the 2010s, most comics do have the same routine of people who will bash the comic and the artist for one trivial reason after the other. The whole SJWs and PC isn't exactly new here.
The Internet feels kind of worse at that angle with most artists who creates abysmal and/or controversial webcomics that allows a lot more "creative" freedom (Do I even NEED to mention Sonichu?) Also, it feels like the Internet is even worse of typecasting you or worse. Aside from the trolls, potential hacking and what not, some people will wanna bash you and your work if you do something that can be a bit iffy in their eyes only for even the most trivial reasons. Point being, the internet is a gateway to the more unstable individuals.
Then again, most comic publishers especially the Big Three (DC, Marvel and Image) can be a bit worse if you think about it. The executive meddling, the constant changes in script midwork, the mistreatment between collegues and so forth. Not to mention the pressure of having to work on a comic that you didn't expect or didn't want to work on, working hard to make sure that each issue will be able to sell decently every month (or week if you are unfortunate enough).
But despite the cons and such, making webcomics is the most profitibe.... If you make porn parodies of children's cartoon series.
