Exultatio is my fan character for the wonderful Temeraire series of novels by Naomi Novik.
He is a hybrid of two British breeds; the acid spitting Longwings and the numerous Yellow Reapers.
The crossbreeding was an attempt to rectify the shortcomings of the Longwings, namely their lack of physical strength for aerial combat with other dragons, and more importantly their unwillingness to accept male captains, a most unacceptable situation for the period!
The crossbreeding resulted in Exultatio, who was to some extent a success in this regard. His captain is Zachary Morrell, son of a transatlantic shipping agent forced into the Aviator Corps after the American War of Independence resulted in fortunes taking a downturn.
