2016 wasn't absolute complete garbage for me. Looking back now I realize this year marked the beginning of when I started to get really serious about creating furry art and selling commissions, and being successful at it. At a few points this year, I went back in the bowels of my gallery and compared the stuff I was drawing now to what I had started with. It was a surprising pick-me-up as I marveled at my own improvement. I wonder what my art may look like in another 6 years.
I wanted to share what I was seeing with all of you, and to inspire anyone out there who was thinking of getting into art themselves. If you ever thought about asking another artist about how they got so good at drawing, my guess is that most of them would say, "A lot of practice." That's what I was told by an artist many years ago, and that's what I would say now to anyone else. I know it might sound like a tired response, but it's a solid truth.
It hasn't always been easy, and I know how depressing critiquing one's own art is. Particularly in the periods 4 to 6 years ago, I would get discouraged by some of my own truly horrid drawings and go on breaks away from drawing that would last 8 months. I suppose it's only natural, I am at least proud of myself for sticking with it in the end, but 8 month periods was a lot of time that could've been spent practicing more.
So again, for all of you would-be artists out there who want to draw and want to get better, I say to you, keep at it and be serious about improving. If you're embarrassed to show your current artwork, there is nothing wrong with practicing privately, I've done that a lot. Most of my early practicing days were spent drawing single body parts over and over and over until they got better. I would also trace over other artists work for practice and study the anatomy (just remember never to upload tracings of other people's work! xP)
Eventually, you'll reach a point where you're excited about your own drawing ability, and that has been the best breakthrough for me where things really started to take off. So again, simply practice if you're serious about improving your drawing, and be patient too, you will improve as long as you keep at it and challenge yourself. To put it more bluntly: Pick up that pen & paper and keep drawing circles and paws until you start sucking less at it. :3
