So I've been dinking with a large CNC lathe at makertech-tuesdays. It was built in about 1987, they got it for about $650, plus $4000 to move it... So I'm poking its innards trying to figure out how to upload Gcode to it, and it turns out that it has bubble memory.
It also has three 8086s (8 MHz) and an 8087. Its a wonderfully bizzare computer, and we have full schematics.

The control is pretty primitive, even for the time. And the documentation (as you've noted) is lacking. I've spent way too much time trying to figure out why it's throwing errors, fixing hardware problems, and then having it still throwing the same errors.
I think it needs to meet Linux. It's a nice, solid machine tied to some seriously obsolete control hardware.
