I returned home after a long weekend out-of-town. As I opened the door between my garage into the house, I found this small snake lying right along the threshold. At first, I thought it was a piece of weather stripping that had come loose from the bottom of the door. I quickly realized the truth when it began making its way down the stairs toward my family room. I grabbed a box to cut off its escape route and then pulled out my camera. I snapped a few photos, then ushered my “guest” into the box and released it in my front yard. I believe this is commonly called a Lined Snake, scientific name Tropidoclonion Lineatum. They are non-venomous and can reach a length of 22inches (57cm). This youngster was somewhere around 15 inches (38cm) long. This species is fairly common where I live.

Around here we have two basic types of snakes...Bullsnakes and Great Basin Rattlesnakes. That's about it. At first glance they both look very much alike, but upon further examination there are obvious and distinct differences... of course, one being venomous and the other not. I usually relocate both kinds whenever I find them in my yard.
How awesome. I had a calico named Michelle that did the same thing. It was another of these lined snakes, about a 10-incher, alive. Michelle was sure proud of herself. We kept the snake in an aquarium for a few days for the kids before finally releasing it. Thanks for sharing your story.
