Choosing not to enter the mansion in the first place, the door slams shut behind you. The wind rolls over the overgrown estate, and creaks as it passes through the mansion behind you. Still you hoped to explore something, if not the interior. After some consideration; you’ve elected the eastern area of the mansion’s property.
Under the moonlight, you can clearly see the extent of the devastated part of the mansion. You can see the broken timbers and the ruptured stone from the mansion, as if something from within had blown out of it. The ground near the center of the blast-crater was striped bare. Given the age of the mansion, it was many years after that catastrophic event; nature had refused to touch the spot. You move along quickly, feeling unseen eyes watching you.
Turning around to put some space between yourself and that empty hole, you find a massive hedge, which forms the entrance to a maze garden. Curious, you enter that maze, marveling at the overgrown hedges, seemingly frozen in time. The hedges are occasionally intertwined with wild roses, and sometimes over shadowed by a massive tree. Great black trees; oaks, birch and pines- trees of all kinds seem to have taken root throughout the maze. Most strike you as regular innocuous trees, but some however have vaguely human shapes. Fog rolls in now, obscuring the way back, and the way forward. Whatever comfort you thought the maze would provide, did not materialize, the eyes remain on you.
Finally a wrong turn leads you face to face with a gnarled and twisted black oak. Glowing eyes peak out from the tree hollow, and you realize what has been watching you. The trees. Eyes blaze open in all of them, sinister in the growing fog. You try to find your way back, but every turn leads you back to that same creepy enclosure, that same humanlike tree, it’s bark and roots twisting out – for you. Finally, you feel you’ve navigated from that accursed tree, and arrived in an empty enclosure. Yet, still you feel the eyes of the many human-like trees bearing down on you. They encircle you, and last, you acquiese. You’re tired of running, and there is nowhere else to turn. Something inside has decided to stay… and to set down roots.
The thought was more literal than you knew. Your legs and feet twist and shape into root like structures, hands and arms growing branches, your abdomen becomes a trunk, and bark encloses your skin. You close your eyes as a human, but reopen them as something else, you shudder as you have become the TREEFOLK HORROR
Ryanr’s bark is worse than his bite. That’s a lie. He’d probably Eat you. Evil trees! This was dually inspired by both the Treant enemies in Castlevania, and the dark Treefolk from the Kessig forests of Ulvenwald and Somberwald in MTG’s Innistrad. I also love/am terrified of Hedge Mazes because of the Anastasia movie from the 1990s.
