Inktober 2nd- Black & White Ruffed Lemur
Whoops! Already messing up!! -- I drew this yesterday, but forgot to upload it on FA, haha!
I post everything to my Twitter account as soon as they're finished, so you can always follow that to get for-sure updates each day! (Assuming you can deal with the boring stuff I tweet about inbetween, that is! Haha!)
I'm featuring the Variegated Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata variegata) for day 2!
There are two species of ruffed lemur: red ruffed (Varecia rubra), and black & white ruffed!
In addition, there are 3 subspecies of black & white ruffed lemurs (variegated, southern, and belted), which all have different fur patterns and live in different areas!
ALL ruffed lemurs, however, are listed as Critically Endangered! :'(
FACT #2!
Lemurs are strepsirrhine primates! -- NOT marsupials, rodents, felines, carnivorans, etc.!
Primates were previously classified into "simians" (monkeys, apes, and humans), and "prosimians" (lemurs, lorises, tarsiers, etc.)
In recent years, they have been reclassified into haplorrhine/"dry-nosed" primates (simians and tarsiers) and strepsirrhine/"wet-nosed" primates (lemurs, lorises, and bushbabies)!
The major difference between them is that strepsirrhines rely primarily on scent for communication; as such, they have a wet nose, similar to cats and dogs!
For most lemurs, the entire snout has little to no fur, so the nose does not look separate from the rest of the muzzle (the way a dog or cat's nose stands out) -- But, there are still a few species that have noses that are textured, differently-colored, etc.!
If you love lemurs (and, c'mon-- who doesn't??) and would like to help with their conservation, consider:
1. Raise awareness!! Spread the word about how badly these guys need help!
2. DRAW LEMURS!! Join us for #Hallowleem and the #WorldLemurFestival by drawing a lemur & sharing it online (along with information about how endangered they are!)
3. DONATE! The Lemur Conservation Network is a great way to look up different organizations, so you can find the perfect one to donate to!
