The Shenandoah Class Battleship was commissioned from KarmaTech by Earthforce to help bolster the ranks of battleships within the fleet five years prior to the start of the Earth-Minbari War. A total of 12 Shenandoahs' had been constructed prior to the E-W War and out of those 12, only 4 survived fairly intact, a fifth member of this class (the EAS Summers) just barely survived total destruction at the Battle of Io. The Remains of the EAS Summers were mothballed for a number of years until being sold off by EarthGov to the newly formed Independent Mars Provisional Government after the end of the Earth Civil War for use by MarsGuard. The EAS Summers was re-christened as the MGSC Mars Dawn.
