I wrote this in honor of a good friend of mine who happened to be a victim of bullying. This story was inspired by real events.
There I was standing in a crowd of hatred toward one person. To my left a scared lost boy by the name of Joseph and to my right a troubled enraged kid by the name of Austin, and a chant that could be heard for miles.
“Fight!”
“Fight!”
“Fight!”
Austin fist raised was walking toward Joseph whom tried to leave, but the crowd wouldn’t allow it. He started to break down and cry. Austin was almost upon Joseph, and that's when it hit me. A desperate need to help the poor Joseph so I did something no one was willing to do. I jumped into the circle and jumped in front of Joseph. The crowd stopped chanting as Austin punched me in the face four consecutive times.
I was knocked down to my feet with blood oozing from my nose and mouth. Joesph at this point made a break for it and right before Austin could catch him I stood back up and stood in his way. He punched me in the gut knocking the wind out of me, then punched me with full force to the mouth knocking a couple teeth loose. I stumbled to one knee, but got back up.
The crowd watched in horror as I was getting back up for more and you could here someone mutter “is he even human?” After a few more punishing blows a siren could be heard in the distance getting louder and louder at each passing moment.
The crowd quickly disbanded leaving me alone with Austin whom broke a few ribs, my nose, and my jaw. Austin tried to run away, but the cops surrounded the area , and everything went dark.
I awoken the next day in the hospital wrapped like up tight in gauze like an ancient mummy. In the corner of my eye I seen Joseph standing at the foot of my bed holding a teddy bear, and a balloon that read” get well soon.” He realized that I was awake and had told me that it took a lot of guts to do what I did for a stranger. I told him that I knew how it felt to be bullied, to be laughed at, to be ignored, to feel like you're alone. He hugged me and left the room in tears.
The cops that made the arrest on Austin visited about an hour later and they said I was both brave and dumb for what I did, and I told them the same thing I told Joseph. A week later I was released from the hospital, and I returned to school the next day. When I arrived at school there was a poster on the wall that read “ASSEMBLY TODAY”
At the assembly I was wheeled toward the front and about five minuets it began. Joseph was leading the assembly and he had mentioned how I came along and stood up for him and how he was bullied for years. I had broken down into tears as the assembly went on. I continued to cry because I made a difference in his life and inspired hundreds to do the Same for others.
