There is a world where the warmth, soul, and image of man remanifests in the bodies of the dead - a world where the very fabric of reality is held by the song of a God, whose denizens must resonate with the harmony of this song lest they be cast into oblivion. This is the Afterworld... and this? This is our hero.
Enter Lukale, a rogue-like denizen of Vivus Falter, the sole town of the Afterworld. Unlike all but another of the populous, Lukale is... well, whole. People are shambling, zombie-like entities who can only mumble, moan, and stagger, unable to properly think or act with any complexity. With the exception of his mentor, Jahal (no, not the gorilla in my gallery), Lukale is the only being capable of complex and whimsical thought, able to retain all memory of his existence post-entry to the Afterworld.
His role in the story is threefold: the first and most important plot is that Lukale must resonate with the entity who sustains the world - and himself, as a citizen - through the use of a crystal harp forged from the bones of a creature known as a Gothwyrm, which is only one of many threats that loom over Vivus Falter. In addition, Lukale discovers a female citizen who shows signs of intelligence; a woman named Carmine. Lukale grows attracted to Carmine as she isn't as shambled or unintelligent as the rest, firmly believing he can teach her how to think, how to act, and how to use her emotions. The final intertwining plot involves the conflict of Lukale and Jahal, due to Jahal's tyrannical desire to expand Vivus Falter and annihilate any native threat to Afterworld and Lukale's desire to keep things the way they are and not take advantage of the easily-manipulated citizens.
Something like that, anyway.
