To be honest, when pondering custom species, there's always references to ponder, what to use, what not to use, what to create, what to leave be. Really, when it comes to my Shadow Beasts, they've always been something I've kept a little on the backburner, to a degree. I haven't put much effort into elaborating upon them, their anatomy, or their design choices that much. Still, there are a couple things that really always tend to come to mind when developed creatures like this. What is their anatomy like? How do they interact with their world? What are their motivations/desires/dreams? What exactly is the species and how did it come about? I've answered most of these questions in the past with this species, but not so much really in detail about the anatomy of the Shadow Beasts.
Phirae helped with this matter by drawing a mawshot piece for the Shadow Beasts, and it's surprisingly interesting trying to develop a mawshot for something that's pure shadow energy, but also is laced with magical properties. So, really, the tendrils are there as arcing shadow energy, more than anything else. An energy being, true to form, in body and in design. Really, the physicality of these creatures is something always up for debate, considering what they are, and what they're capable of.
To be honest, this is another thing to tic off the list of things to do, but I'm glad to have it done. It's quality, I can say that.

It really is. I've been rather intrigued by interesting maw types, and really, this one was challenging to design, as the creature is literally pure shadow energy. It's more about how you execute it versus how it's designed, I guess. Gotta give the artist props for working with me on this one.
