Well, think of it this way: Most of the larger critters weren't really designed to be true to their source material. This was a Swords 'n' Sorcery epic, so Dragon was designed less as a cat and more as a literal dungeon monster!
(The same way that the Great Owl was styled after the prototypical Great Wyrm, Nicodemus became a senior mage, and so on).
