This stepped into my life today, a Three toe box tortose. happenes to be a female, short tail, no concave plastron (lower shell). Seems the original owner left her with neighbor and moved and the neighbor was just going to set her loose outdoors and hope the best for the tortose. I guestimate her age around 15-20 years old. Clearly she's used to people, she's not buttoned up tight once. I returned to the house today so the woman could extract her from a dog kennel.
I need to obtain a heat pad for her at some point when I can afford one, and a porcilain based lamp for light , hopefully soon.
Plus yet to think up a name for her.
*EDIT* Doing a more detailed exam of her, and able to count some of her still visable rings, I estimate she's in in mid to late 30s.

You have a shellback too?
I took mine over to the ex's, she has my preveious two still to hopefully get her to "monkey see, monkey do" cause she wasn't eating offered foods that shellbacks normally love. Like strawberries, earthworms, jumbo mealworms, assorted greens.

Well, I have a small turtle (the typical green one with red marks on its cheeks).
It was from my sister but she wasn't taking care of it so I addopted it. Plus, it had a large bulge on the neck, which resulted to be an otitis, so had to take it to the vet.
Now that the winter is here I wonder if it will hibernate, plus these last days isn't eating much.

Thats where the Internet is handy, also check turtle/tortoise boards and ask or see if others had similar problems. I haven't owned a water turtle in decades and never a red eared slider. Tortoises require less maintenance and generally easier to feed. My other tortoises even loved to chow down on mice we captured in the house.
Plus some reptiles don't hibernate in captivity, some go through in whats called brunation, a semi-hibernation. My bearded dragon did that last year, went to the cooler side of his terrarium and slept for 2-3 weeks. Worried me big time til I searched out on the reptile boards and found out it was typical.
