Hmm, catching up.
When a character acts in an unexpected way or shows a different side of their character, I think it's important to give the reader some context for that change. Otherwise, it's jarring and distracting from the story. Even a frame or two to help shift Kibbles to an attitude (maybe not fully expressed at first, either) would orient the reader to a deepening characterization rather than an uneven one.
