I'm not 100% sure of the backstory of the comic. I imagine that cottontail nursery was basically a rehabilitation center for assholes. So I imagine that varden was one of the earliest folks kidnapped to try ye program, and they ended up breaking him accidentally. Making him permanently into this big baby sweetheart. And they just decided to keep him :3
