It comes from the attack on Toby's home planet. He's one of the few survivors of his race -- pulled from the rubble of a blast that killed many of the people he cared about. He's a refugee. In the previous comic, the word "stray" is used as a derogatory term for feline refugees.

He largely has a positive attitude given all that's happened to him. Though it seems he lashes out at times, given the last page.

He's written to be similar but different than Felix.

Felix is happy out of optimistic and possibly naive world view

Toby lashing out gets explained in the coming comics. At this time though, it can probably be assumed that someone laying a hand on his buddy had something to do with it

At the end of the day, Toby exemplifies one important key to happiness. Be greatful for what you have and count your blessings where you find them. Friends, food, shelter - not all are as fortunate as we are even for what little we may have.
