Ermett managed to snatch up a shiny trinket off of the slain spider invaders and attempted to commune with his goddess. Though for a male to even dare attempt an audience with her is blasphemous enough, and before he could explain his position, and why he is travelling as a woman's equal outside the underdark she curses him.
We all know what is in store for him, but at this point he is unaware of what it could be, aside from an electric jolt through his body from the scarab.
