Frae had always been a bit of an outsider, even for a place like the Romuin empire's capitol with it's cultural diversity. Not because she is a hippogriff as those are fairly common in the Imperial city, though she's not the typical specimen as she takes more after her father, but because she was learning to fight ever since she was young. Fighting and handling weapons is not something that's culturally accepted for females outside of the arena where slaves, criminals and prisoners of war would fight for the entertainment of the public. And it was actually one of these female gladiators that inspired Frae to learn how to fight and become an adventurer.

So posing as a boy she joined the gladiator school where she eventually bested all her fellow students, however she was discovered as a female after a jealous rival gravely wounded her in a cowardly sneak attack in the middle of the night. She was sentenced to jail, however she was able to convert her punsihment, partially with the help of her father, to fight in the arena instead to regain her freedom and honor.

She spent the next five years fighting in the arena where she honed her body and fighting skills alongside the female gladiator she had always admired. The two of them became close friends during those years untill they both finally won their freedom, pardoned by the emperess herself. They were offered a job as the emperess's personal guard which they declined since Frae had primised her friend to travel home with her and start a new life as an adventurer.
