writing challenge day 18 "how Brinley and Toriel met"
a while back, i set myself up on a writing challenge. go a month, writing a new story every day, (500 words on days i worked, 1000 words son days i was off) with a theme given to me by my friend
GothicVixen-Autumn during this time, i banned myself from any videogames and computer, limiting myself to books and skype mobile to chat with friends on occasion.
although i failed the challenge, i decided to upload my work here now. (and by now, i mean, late, again, cuz im a lazy rabbit and forgot to upload the rest!) Some of them are good, some of them are.. not good. some of them are finished, some are works in progress. comes with the territory i suppose. as always, constructive criticism is always welcome <3
*Now, interesting story here. This was actually written before the full release of the game, all i had to work from was the demo. Also, it wasn't finished, partly because of that. Didn't know what the underground was gonna be like yet, so i cut the story reaaaally early. Sorry bout that..

Rook's closed eyes turned to half lidded, slowly blinking till they finally opened up. It was dark, unnaturally so. The only light was a single sunbeam that illuminated a field of long dead leaves. "Did.. I fall?" Rook glanced up at the hole where the sunlight made its way in; before getting a pounding headache.
Rook struggled to his feet, before looking around for any way out. The ceiling looked like it was miles up; a miracle he survived the fall. Struggling with the ferocious migraine, Rook started to look around. A couple minuscule sunbeams lit up a stone pathway.
Nervously, the young Bunwolf started to make his way down the path. "Hi!" A voice rang from off the path. A small patch of grass seemed to irradiate with light, from a strange little sunflower. A big smile across its face. "Im flowey the flower!"
Rook yelped with a start, caught off guard by the talking plant. "A talking... Plant?"
"Hmm... Youre new to the underground aren'tcha? Golly, you must be so confused. Someone oughta teach you how things work around here. I guess little old me will have to do"
Rook stares blankly at the heavy winded sunflower, still not entirely sure how to respond.
"Ready? Here we go!" The flower closed his eyes, little white pellets hovered I'm a circle around him. "Here in the underground, you need Love! Love is shared through these little white pellets. Ill share some of mine with you!"
Rook looked at the flower, and the pellets, before getting a churning in bis gut. Something didn't feel, right.
"Grab as many as you can!" Yelled Flowey gleefully. Rook tensed, as the little white orbs approached slowly, finally stepping aside to avoid them as they got close.
Thoughts of his mother clouded his mind. Just this morning the care she put into waking him up to birthday breakfast in bed. He was going to open his presents after playing in the yard, but it seems he wandered too far off, and somehow tripped into the hole.
"Those don't feel like love.." Rook murmured. Those memories gave off a warm happiness, peace of mind, these irradiated cold and loneliness.
Flowey's smile turned to a ghoulish scowl. "You idiot. Of course its not! Its kill or be killed down here!" More of the white balls made their way from the flower, encircling the bunwolf. A chill of fear ran down his spine. Much too many of them to avoid.
"Brinley.." Rook cowered, circling slowly to see all the menacing balls encroaching. But, just as he was about to give up, a ball of fire caught the flower, torching it where he stood.
Rooks fear refused to subside, even though he was rescued. Till she approached. A caprine. Wearing a long blue and white robe. "What a cretin. Torturing such a poor innocent youth..." She approached Rook. Something about her put him at ease. She reminded Rook, in some way, of a lullaby. In voice and movement. "Ah. Do not be afraid my child. I am Toriel. Caretaker of the ruins."
Rook shied away from her just slightly. Justifiably cautious at the moment, only to again, hear the gentle caress of her voice. "I pass through this place every day to see if anyone has fallen down. Come, i will guide you through the catacombs." She gently took Rook's hand, to help him down the dark path. "Welcome to your new home, innocent one" she smiled.
Rook tensed from the comment. "I cant stay here.. My mommy will miss me.. Shes probably looking for me now!"
Toriel turned, to gently caress the young boys cheek. "No one has ever made it back to the surface innocent one.." Her smile turned to a sad frown, as she watched Rooks emotions change to ones of such sorrow. "Maybe, your mother will fine her way down here as well." She attempted to cheer Rook up; to no avail.
Seeing as there was no point in arguing, Toriel got to her feet. Eyes still locked on the child, missing his mother. "Allow me, to educate you in the operation of the ruins." She said, as she attempted to change to the subject. She hated seeing children sad.
Toriel pointed to six stones that elevated from the ground, two by two by two. The center column had a strip of lighter colored stone beneath them. The caprine patiently waited for Rook to look over at her, before stepping on the four outlying stones, forcing a nearby door to open. "The ruins are full of puzzles. An ancient fusion between diversion and door keys. One must solve them to move from room to room. Please adjust yourself to the sight of them."
Rook frowned at her, near the verge of tears. "I cant stay here! Me and mom were going to open my birthday presents when we got home.. But i wandered away.." Painful ideas of never seeing his mother again, drove Rook to tears. Little droplets of cold water trickled down, soaking his white furred cheeks.
Toriel whimpered softly, coming back to the boys side, and dropping to a knee, so she could gently thumb away the tears. Her fur didn't feel like a goat, it felt closer to a delicate velvet. "Little child, be not afraid.
The rain pounds harsh against the glass.
Like an unwanted stranger
There is no danger
I am here tonight."
Rook sniffled as his tears slowed to a halt. His bright blue eyes meeting with hers. The lullaby didn't quite fit, but it made him relax enough, to cling to the strange woman. "Please.. Toriel.. I need to go home.. I can't.. Live without my mommy.. Shes always been there, and.." He started to choke up. The tears pouring once more "shes done everything for me.. I.. "
Toriel pressed her finger to Rook's lips, before gently hoisting him up over her shoulders, and carrying him to the next room. "Little child
Be not afraid
Though thunder explodes
And lightning flash
Illuminates your tearstained face
I am here tonight."
Toriel continued the delicate song; a strange peace helping Rook to stifle the tears again. "You were going to open presents, my child?" Toriel asked. Gently trying to cheer him up once more.

"Allow me, to educate you in the operation of the ruins." line feels... a little bit out of character... a little too robotic, "here child let me show you how things works in the ruins" or something feels like its softer in tone, up until the little child dont be afraid i feel un-immersed. also there feels like a lack of movement or change of scenery, have them walking, toriel holding rook as he cries in her arms and they walk back to safety, something like that
