I think it just depends on the severity of the burn as well as the type. :o With chemical burns, fur still gores back (although slowly and not as thick as before) and with fire, depending on how badly the flesh was damaged, it will grow back fairly normally or not at all. If only part of the face is damaged, it seems likely that it was nothing too severe and fairly isolated to that area. :3
And I know those types of dreams. I hate them. ;-; Making me think I made progress when I didn't. But at this point, this type of scene has happened in the comic so darned many times that I may rip my hair out if this is another dream sequence. O3O Even more so as we were told it was ending soon.

It's been YEARS. But then again he's married to work even if it's more dangerous than anything with family.
Though, what if this is a dream but only in the sense that her timid mind is making her think of Jack and it's really Soufflé talking, glad to have found is niece?
Still, even if it Jack, I can't see him as going literally this long, with this delusion in his mind never doubting his doubts.

I don't recall what pages it happened in, but in multiple scenes you see her in a home that looks like the ones in her dreams, but is burned and broken. Zee mentioned in a panel referring to them that someone was showing her memories, which implied the burned house was an actual memory, rather than just a dream. :o
Basically the dreams are, to my understanding, her way of coping with growing up as (to her knowledge) an orphan who was thrown away by her family that may or may not be alive, but did certainly not want her. So she dreams of being loved and wanted and having the childhood she never had. Eventually things turn darker, she learns her family (or most of it) actually did want her and are still alive (possibly, some of it maybe), and now she has to find them. But, everyone thinks she is crazy and she probably is crazy. o3o
Okay, I have come up with an idea from reading your comments, but it may sound crazy.
What if, when Nicole brought Gem back, Jack flew into such a rage that he set the house of fire in which he, Nicole, and Gem's brothers died. Maybe they are communicating with her from the afterlife.

That's a possibility but considering the adult Zee from earlier was a "ghost"/dream then so is this. And if it isn't, who's to say he's here on TRULY malicious intents. If he is, he's no more a fool than an emperor with no clothes id say.
Again, she hasn't seen his face and he and Soufflé look freakin IDENTICAL! (It's like telling the difference between the two witches from Spirited Away; practically impossible)

Well...given his tone, don't you think that's what she would think his expression and intentions are.
AND, if this truly is him...how did he get through, in a hospital gown, when nobody is allowed to visit her now? (Without causing an alarm. And if you say cause he's a fox, you're specist. )

If Jack has been in this hospital for any length of time, and most probably he has been, then he knows the schedule of the nurses, and how to get around inside of the hospital without being seen. So, it wouldn't REALLY be that hard to get to Gemma's room without being seen.
Furthermore, there isn't anyone in that hospital, except Jack, that knows the relationship between Jack and Gemma. If they did, they most certainly would have put some kind of security on her or him. Given that they don't know, they may not be looking as hard as they would be normally.

No, no, no. As stated somewhere else in these comments, Gemma was taken to Cornhill Hospital. The Royal Cornhill Hospital, in Aberdeen, Scotland, around where Sammy is from, is a MENTAL HOSPITAL. Gemma was brought here for psychiatric evaluation. They do that in a mental health hospital. Remember, the doc said she would be here for at least two weeks because of the commitment type.
So, Jack is there as a Patient. I'm guessing he's been there for a very long time, years and years maybe. Gemma is 35, IIRC, so I wouldn't be surprised if Jack had been there for 33 or 34 years.
Read the other comment I made about the birthday party, too. That's important.

Okay...so with that hospital aspect in mind....I could actually believe this is reality, but I'm not sure whether Jack is gonna do the cliché villain thing and talk before attempting to kill her, (monologue that is), or just get down to the dirty work...then again, why would he do the latter...if he's in there as a patient, he'll ENJOY every second of her being scared shitless in his presence.
Well, he did do work in medical research, particularly on dementia, so it is possible he works at the hospital. On the other hand, if he is a ghost then we don't need much of an explanation as to how he got in. He might even have died at that hospital and still sort of haunts it.
Actually...what if, he himself acquired dementia, (which I'll admit I don't know the full effects of), but considering his old age...and how much his mind was strained in his field of labor...along with what fears and doubts he had on his own family....I wouldn't be surprised if his own mind deteriorated leaving him back to how he was around Gem's infancy...clueless and ignorant.
Go back to the birthday party scene, and look at him there, and then look at him here. Times have been hard on Jack. I believe that Jack developed some sort of paranoia or dementia when he was working on the 'cure', possibly as a side effect. How can he be really happy about his 'cure' on one page and then totally off the way psychotic the next page, within a span of a minute or two?
most likely nicole. when Gem dreamed about her first birthday it was most likely her mother showing her memories which clued Gem into believing her mom didn't abandon her like Jack said she did (remember Jack was being biased in the story he told Gem in one of the dreams before he tried to strangle her).
How about if he was in a fight? How about if that was some sort of accident, or maybe the result of something acidic being thrown at him?
I don't think it's a dream, this is all too real. In a dream, Jack's hair wouldn't be tinged with grey (great job, Squig!) and he wouldn't be wearing a hospital gown.

Maybe it's just me but if this keeps happening over and over, Gem is gonna legitimately snap...I mean, at some point Jack is gonna pop up again and Gem is either gonna say, "oh come on...again?" or crack and go permanently wonky in the head and set up a non-temporary residence at loopyville. I've never actually felt gnawing sorrow for comic characters but this is starting tug at the ol heart strings. Lol
Believe me, Zee, I very much believe this is real. At least, real in the sense that Jack and Gemma are occupying the same room at the same time.
My question is, and this is rather deep, and I've wondered it for some time, is this entire story a dream? People just don't invade other's dreams and share memories. So, is someone dreaming this entire story?
I was watching Sam draw this earlier when she was streaming, although I didn't catch all of it. But, I knew they were in the same hospital, and I believe that Jack is indeed real and in her room.

I don't know if I agree that the ENTIRE story could be a dream, like if the story were to end with her waking up after what we saw as the "first" dream, if that's what you mean. I do know that traumatic memories do have a powerful effect on our psyche if they were once repressed and resurface by a sensory experience, and it can cause dreams to center around this event, and it can even effect our waking experiences. I don't know if it can stretch back as far as infancy, where memories get to be particularly fuzzy to begin with, but it's a story after all. I don't think he's actually in the room with her though. It seems far more unlikely that he would just happen to be in the same psych ward of the same hospital at the same time, and also there's the detail that he doesn't appear to have aged at all. Though as I typed this, I did just noticed the fact that the shadowed half of his face is disfigured and scarred. It may just be too early to tell at this point.

Back in the 1980's and 1990's two television shows were aired, starring the stand up comedian Bob Newhart. The first was called 'The Bob Newhart Show' and the second, simply, 'Newhart.' In the first show, he played a Chicago based psychiatrist, and in the second, he played a Vermont Inn keeper and owner. The second show was known for the running gag line of 'Hi, I'm Larry, this is my brother Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl.
At the end of the second show, the last scene of the last episode, it started out dark on set, but you could make out two people in bed. However, the bedroom set was from the FIRST show, not the second one. He wakes up in bed complaining about this really weird dream that he had, that he was an innkeeper in Vermont, with a ditzy girl, and three handymen. His wife in bed was not the wife from the second show, but the first show.
The premise was that the entire second show was nothing but a weird dream, start to finish. It was very well received by the audience, who loved the gag.
So, what I'm saying is that the plot twist HAS been used, effectively. In the end, we could find that this entire story is nothing but Star having a weird dream, and she's late for work again, and Marellis is going to chew her arse again.

In that instance sure it works, because the shows were set up to break the fourth wall in a hilarious way so yeah I'll give you that instance.
Now that I think about it, it also worked in American Psycho. Also Fight Club, sort of. Though that one is more of a solipsistic dual personality situation rather than a dream.
In this case though, I'm actually starting to rethink the possibility that Jack is real.

No, that's not possible, since Gemma saw Souffle in the court room. She didn't see Jack, because Jack was, and has been, here in the mental hospital. So, we KNOW that both Jack and Souffle are alive. If, somehow, it had been Jack in the Court room, then we would have seen the damage to his face. Souffle's face was fine, PLUS, he actually turned at his name being called.
shut up two face.
I must say hes one of the few character I really really hate (in a "hes written so good I hate him" sense) I just want to go inside the story and turn his head into mush.
But as someone who was in an mental hospital ones (long story) I doubt that hes real in this scene. Normaly you are with 2 to 3 person in one room (where I was at least) and you cant get into someones room without the nurses at least notice you once. Not to mention that they check every 1-2 hours in the night.
And well I have a strong feeling what really happened and well if thats the case I would think he would be in a higher security facility expect hes so manipulativ he showed himself as a victim.
But if that really him, I hope Paul turns him into a cripple.

Depends on the hospital. In some places, it would be very easy to get to her room. If the nursing staff are doing checks, Jack is brilliant enough to figure out how to get by and around them without being seen. I assume he's been there long enough for him to have a routine figured out.
Also, since no one knows he's Gemma's father, no one would consider it unusual if he was a night walker. Now, if he was in a hospital for the criminally insane, which doesn't appear to be the case here, he wouldn't be allowed to walk around, but we don't KNOW why he's here. I'll be willing to bet he's been here a while, though.

I watched the Squig this morning/afternoon as she was drawing this, and a lot of this went through my own mind, only I didn't have the 'luxury' of seeing her finish it. I was just too tired, and needed to go back to bed. But, I commented in the stream that Jack's manner of dress indicated that he was in the same hospital as Gemma was. Also, the damage to his ear (I didn't see the facial stuff at that time) indicated a fight, but maybe a lab accident, or something in the lab.
No, I believe that he's standing in her room, this is not a dream, and I hope that Paul is awake enough to hear her call out when she needs him.
So, this answers two questions. One, it WAS Souffle in the court room. Two, Jack IS still alive.
But, it offers up another set of questions. How is Gemma receiving all of these dreams and memories? If both Jack and Souffle are 'real', who and how were 'memories' shared with her? Is Nicole alive somewhere, and Zee and Rasile also alive? Maybe Zee moved away and is living in San Diego.
I don't know of any way someone can receive memories and such in dreams.
So, the entire question then becomes, is this whole graphic novel nothing more than a dream in and of itself, and if so, who's dreaming it?
Squig, again, thank you for sharing your immense talents with us today, and it was fun watching Yookey, Tavi, and Rex all streaming with you. This story has more twists and turns than the Pacific Coast Highway!

eeehhh I just had a super morbid thought...
What if Jack found out (hehe, found) about Gem's mom trying to leave to go leave with Souffle and burned the house down with all of them inside? This is Gem's subconscious remembering the memory and projecting the burned imagery on his face even though she can consciously remember

Knowing jack this could either be a dream or reality. Probably a dream though as I dont think they would let another patient visit a new patient alone and secondly even if he snuck in how would he know that she was there.
On the other hand it could be reality because jack most likely went batshit insane at some point.

Swede, how did Paul find her? It was on the television. Mental hospitals also have televisions for patients to watch, too. If Jack has been there for any significant amount of time, which is probably so, then he would be familiar with the routines, the layout and no one knows he's in her room, except Gemma. He didn't ASK to visit her, he came stealthily in the night, has been there for a while, waiting for her to wake up.
Im just gonna say that when I was hospitalized at a Mental hospital they didn't allow us to watch news mostly due to the fact that the staff was scared that it would trigger depressive attacks for the patients. Also they walked around and checked on us to see that we were in fact in our rooms during the night and that no one else was in our rooms or so that we hadn't commited suicide. I would assume that the same safety measures would be in place at most mental hospitals.
Hmmm. I hate to bring up my own past, but I was twice hospitalized for 'suicidal ideation' and the first time I shared a room, but we were allowed to walk around unsupervised, television wasn't a problem, we could watch what we wanted, within reason in the group room, and yes, there were night checks, but only a couple of of time. The second time, I had a room to myself, and the night checks didn't happen more than once a night, and if you wanted to be going to another room, it was probably frowned on, but you could make it, if you really wanted to.
If you've not read Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" series, I used to sit up to three and four a.m., reading those books. In one of them, I had to put it down because I thought his family was going to be murdered, or at least one of his family members. There's another one that I just can't get started on because of the thought of a biological attack on American soil from people in our own country. It well precedes ISIS and Al Queda in its writing, but those books scare the hell outta me.
There are some totally great authors out there who can weave spellbinding tales, and our Squig is one of them!

not entirely true. When a door closes, it normally makes a clicking sound like that anyway. and I'm pretty sure hospitals don't look doors on their patients, and I'm pretty sure the only type that does that is a mental hospital, which I'm pretty sure this isn't that.
However, I'm with you on this not being real.
However, I'm with you on this not being real.
Actually, she was taken to Cornhill Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. I'm assuming that since our Squig is Scottish, she's using things she knows. So, this story must be set in and around Aberdeen, Scotland, where the Royal Cornhill Hospital is located. Cornhill IS a psychiatric hospital.

In a mental health facility, if the doors lock, they usually lock from the outside, not the inside, preventing patients from escaping. So, Jack would be able to enter. But, if that was true, then how did Paul get OUT? You're right, the door just clicked shut.
As to being real, it's my belief that this is as real as it gets. Now, I did go back and went through the birthday scene, and the Squig did mention that one page was super duper important to the plot. On that page, Jack announced that they had developed a cure for dementia. It's possible that even back that far, it had unknown side effects which actually might CREATE some sort of ultra-paranoia or disconnect from reality, and Jack is seriously affected by those side effects just from working around the stuff. He may have even been a guinea pig for his own experiments.

Ah, ok. I've never heard of the hospital before, so my mistake.
As for Jack in the room being real, or not. That is somewhat conflicting, as I'm pretty sure if he was never around her as she grew up, he wouldn't recognize her. On the other hand, who's to say he hasn't been keeping tabs on her? Another thing that I noticed now that you pointed it out. What if that drug the psychiatrist gave Gem was the end result of Jack's experiments, and that's what's starting to make her dreams and reality blur together right now?

As to the hospital, I went back to the scene where Paul was at home, and the story about Gemma came on the television. They said that she had been taken to Cornhill Hospital for a psych eval. Then, of course, when Dr. Nick said that she was involuntarily committed for two weeks, that kind of sealed it as being in a psychiatric hospital.
I'm one of those crazy people, and I like a bit of realism in the stories that *I* write, so I did a Google search on Cornhill Hospital and came up with the information I did.
As for Jack, there's so much here that we don't know. However, he IS in hospital garb. Now, at least here in the U.S., if you're committed to a mental health facility, unless you're bedridden, you're usually allowed to wear regular street clothes around. But, for a story, especially a graphic novel, we want to use small 'tell-tales' to add to the story without actually having to spell it out. So, Jack being in the hospital gown he's in should tell the reader that he is infact, a patient there. At least, if I was writing this story, that's how I would present it.
Now, we can assume that Jack, at some point, probably went a bit crazy, and if the scenes of the destroyed home in Gemma's memories are real, Jack may have been tried for that, and found insane, and put in a hospital. Remember, Jack is a brilliant man, he has to be to do what he was doing (as is Souffle). But, he could also be cunning as well, and if he's been hospitalized for all these years, he might have found a way to follow Gemma's life and career.
Finally, as to the drug that Kitsune gave probably would not be the end result of Jack's work. If, as I suspect, Jack is the way he is because of some kind of yet unknown side effect from the drug, or even being around the chemicals in it, then it would have come out in clinical trials or others taking the drug would have exhibited the same sorts of behaviours as Jack does. It would never have been approved. Dr. Kitsune would not have had access to the drug.
By the way, The Living Well Centre is ALSO a real place. I looked that up, too, but Squig had already noted that in her comments on that page. The address matched, and everything. So, Squig is drawing from real life here.

Okay, either:
A. This is all another dream.
B. He's another hallucination.
C. His tone and expression are red herrings and his is intentions aren't really malicious at all.
D. He has a sort of Jekyll & Hyde thing going on, and hopefully the Jekyll half will intervene to save Gem from the Hyde half.

But, it's really NOT a Babyfur comic. It's a journey of self discovery, it's a story of finding one's self, and hopefully about finding a family. Just because Gemma was dreaming of herself as a baby, and of course, babies wear diapers, doesn't make it a BabyFur graphic novel.
This is SO SCARY. Is this real? It could be. We've never found out what really happened to any of Gem's family in the end. He's dressed like a patient, not a doctor, so he shouldn't be out of his room, but maybe he has his ways of sneaking out. But he would've had to find out she was there. Or she might just be dreaming that she's awake. From the way she was only asleep for one panel, it seems like she didn't sleep long, and if that's a window, it's still dark out, but Gemma says she's very tired, so she wouldn't be likely to wake up right away, so perhaps she's not really awake. "It's either real or it's a dream, there's nothing that is in between ..."
"Souffle" is spelled wonky there.

Anyone see the uncanny resemblance to this scene?
