Tech sat on a steel bed in the corner of his lab, feeling uneasy indeed. Despite his familiarity with his beloved workspace, he began, for the first time, to notice how cold and sterile the massive room really was. Around him, unfinished projects and spare parts littered cluttered shelves, and banks of computer monitors glowed dimly from afar. The fact that he was dressed in only his boxer shorts surely had something to do with the mild chill that the coyote kept feeling running up and down his spine, wracking his lean and toned body. He began to regret the snarky teasing that he had given his teammates about their own discomfort as he was examining them himself earlier throughout the week. Was Rev keeping him waiting this long in order to tease him back...?
With physical fitness so crucial to their jobs, the Loonatics team set aside time once a year for scheduled physical checkups. Tech, with his imposing command of all things scientific, served as the team's de facto doctor. One by one over the past week, Tech had called Ace, Duck, Slam, Rev, and Lexi to his lab, where he had converted one corner into a small medical bay with all of the equipment needed to address battle injuries and to conduct thorough fitness examinations. Although Tech had encouraged Slam to lose some weight (with little real expectation of the big Tasmanian Devil to comply), the coyote had found no concerning health issues with his teammates-- after all, their nearly-constant physical training helped keep them in excellent shape. Now, the only team member left to be examined was Tech himself, who once again found himself wondering what was taking his normally-fastidiously-punctual protégé so long to show up for the coyote's own scheduled appointment.
Rev, though the youngest member of the team at only 17, possessed a keen mind, and the sprightly, energetic bird shared a quick and easy mutual chemistry with Tech which had started the moment that the two had first met. The fact that Rev was also an aspiring scientist gave Tech one more reason to take the bird "under his wing" as a lab technician, and it meant that Rev was the natural choice to fill in on medical assignments-- and, indeed, to examine Tech himself when it was the coyote's turn for a checkup. And, considering that Tech was much more comfortable conducting experiments than being experimented on himself, the fact that Rev would be the one momentarily serving as his doctor provided at least a little comfort for the currently nervous coyote...
...After all, a nagging voice in Tech's head kept reminding him... He WAS the oldest member of the team... Not that 28 was very old, he reminded himself in counterargument... But still... How much longer could he keep up with his younger counterparts before his body began to show signs of fatigue...?
As Tech pondered these pervasive worries, he heard the lab's back door open behind him. His mind snapped back to the present.
"Rev!" the coyote called out, making little effort to mask his relief, "What took you so long? I was beginning to think you'd forgotten abou--" The coyote stopped dead in his sentence, as, swinging around on the bed, he caught sight not of Rev, but of Lexi stepping into the room.
"Hello, Tech!" the perky, not to mention authoritative, rabbit said cheerfully, setting some files down on a nearby table. "Rev got called by Ace at the last minute for some sort of reconnaissance mission-- Ace said it couldn't wait. But they both agreed that I could fill in for Rev to conduct your physical exam!"
Tech gaped. "Y-you...? Lexi, um, I don't mean to be rude, but Rev is the only one besides me qualified to conduct medical examinatio--"
"Don't worry, Brains," the rabbit interrupted, propping a paw on her hip cheekily. "Rev's been teaching me a lot of you guys' science mumbo jumbo on the side recently. And I've been studying up. In fact, I just passed my ARCH-1 exam last week. I've been waiting to surprise you, Know-It-All. So technically, I AM qualified to conduct medical examinations now."
The coyote stuttered, trying to think of an excuse to call off the examination at the last minute, but Lexi silenced him again before he could proceed.
"Sorry, Brains, but Ace said he can't have you waiting for your exam any longer, because we've got a busy week coming up," said the rabbit. Then, she added teasingly (not to mention infuriatingly), "What's the matter with you, anyway? Hasn't a girl ever seen you with your shirt off?"
The coyote did his best to hide a frustrated scowl. "Just... get on it with it, then..." he finally muttered, a bit of irritation now mixing with his nerves.
Lexi complied briskly, flicking on a nearby machine that was used to monitor a patient's heartbeat for the duration of an exam. Tech looked down as Lexi attached a pair of electrodes to his chest, and turned to glance at the machine as it buzzed to life, a neon green line tracing the electrical pattern of his heartbeat as it paced across the monitor...
The coyote started as Lexi suddenly took Tech's wrist into her paw with surprising grip, a stethoscope in her ears, and a grin across her face. "Honestly, Tech, what is into you? You need to relax! Now lie down, so I can check your heart...!"
The rabbit pushed the coyote onto his back without waiting for a response, although, Tech couldn't help but think, with a slightly more gentle touch than usual this time. She pushed the cold metallic head of the stethoscope against the left side of the coyote's bare chest, causing him to recoil slightly. "Take a deep breath," she began, reciting the familiar spiel that Tech himself had given to his teammates many times in the past...
The coyote complied, glumly, glancing from the rabbit's face, deep in concentration, back down to the metal instrument pressed to his chest...
Rev knew about the coyote's occasionally irregular heartbeat. The bird had kept the condition a secret between himself and Tech. But would Lexi, a stickler for the rules, report that same diagnosis to Ace? Would Ace have him suspended out of concern, or even removed from the team...? Would Lexi, a mere novice at medical diagnosing, even notice the problem at all...?
The EKG monitor beeped rapidly in the background, seemingly waiting to find fault with the coyote whose nerves were only quickening the pace of his already racing heart...
