Strangely enough, this reminds me of an older *DC* comic when they were doing their run of "Elseworld" series involving various heroes and villains that were put into alternate situations where their lives took different turns based on a change at a seemingly critical instance (( for example.. if superman's rocket when he was a child didn't crash in Kansas, but instead, in the British empire ))
there was one elseworlds 2-part book in which a huge number of ships had banded together under the flag of an alien pirate cadre and invaded the earth.. decimation was pretty severe and about 80 or more percent of the general population of heroes and villains either died or ( the weaker ones) went into hiding to escape being targeted (( the alien pirate boss figured "rigthly" that the good guys were bad enough, but a super powered villain with far less ethical qualms could be an even bigger pain then the hero would.. so he had his forces target BOTH sides of the coin. )
the piece you've done reminds me of a green lantern who's in hiding under the guise of a simple gravedigger.. he finds the remains of a few hundred odd thousand citizens that perished ( supposedly along with his own family that died during an attack when he and other heroes resisted the invasion.. him not being able to save them along with thousands of others broke his spirit ) and now he goes around finding the remains and simply giving them a proper burial.. all the while remembering his own family and those thousands of others who were virtually atomized in the initial retributive strikes the pirates made when the hero and villain wave combined proved to be too tough to break during the original invasion as they came and set up a small planetary base to work from too.

Jeez, I remember that! I loved how Lex Luthor almost died in a surprise attack and became... another kind of Man of Steel.
If you ever remember which editions those were, please tell me, I only read the first and now I really want to know how the story ends.
Edit: Ah, nevermind, found it, Adventures of Superman Annual Vol 1 #6 and Superboy Annual Vol 4 #1

Thanks hon.. I'd forgotten what those two were named... now I can go find em.. WHEE!
another thing I loved about that set was that in it, Batman became a total, unbelievable BADASS! ( as if he wasn't before).. the pirates talked in whispers of some kind of black force that kept destroying their outposts, supply lines and such.. no one saw him / it come or leave, and there were NEVER any survivors..
He was taking that " criminally cowardly superstitious bit" to the Nth Degree

Ah yeeees, that was incredible too! That was such a great idea, and so much his style as well, complete black ops, infiltrating and evading just like a ghost.
One of Superman's lines really stuck with me, it was more or less "I'm sorry... I can't help you. But Superman can!" and then he'd rip a piece off the wall, revealing his uniform inside it.
