And what do you use for posing? Selecting a piece of the mesh and rotating it into the wanted shape?

sadly and pathetically, that and empties.
i have played with rigging a little bit, but i'm no where near up to speed on it.
i'm just really slow at learning anything.

Some programs have the function of automatic weights. The results are not always optimal, but still way faster than weight painting everything yourself.
