for regular followers: this this the backstory of the Pirate King's father and his slave's 'mother'
don't worry it's not as incesty as it seems. the Pirate King's Father isn't also the father of the Pirate King's slave, and the "mother" isn't the biological mother, she's just the one who raised her it's all copacetic
for anyone not familiar with this nonsense and actually cares: hi this world takes place in a ridiculous setting where there's no sun and everything is just islands floating on a rainbow ocean made of magic energy. here's what all the races referenced are and this is the gallery tag, although a lot of the stuff in there is old art that reflects an out-dated prototype version of the setting

I really like this. In a way the prince's understanding of the slave's story reminds me of the story of Alexander and Diogenes, how Diogenes told Alexander something seemingly churlish that everyone thought he would take offense to, but Alexander had understood the meaning behind Diogenes words and philosophy, and rather than take offense he accepted Diogenes' words. Obviously, the similarities kind of stop there, as in the story of Alexander and Diogenes, Alexander specifically sought out Diogenes and did not end up wanting more from Diogenes, but I always kind of like to see the whole "young ruler that surprises those around them by being more introspective and observant of underlying meanings than their peers" thing written well.
But yeah, all the characters in this are neat, the whole nested story thing is rad, I'm glad I re-read this since I did not retain any of what I read the first time I read it in a tired state.
