TL;DR: Khaz grows up, him and Nomminus head to a new continent to explore, and find a civilization they weren’t expecting to find.
It had been some years gone by since the chance meeting in Clawwood. They’d spent two winters in that small lumber town. Nomminus feeling Khaz wasn’t quite ready to take on winter in the wilds.
Their adventures were many, and some perilous. But they made it out alive and ready to embark on further journeys
In their travels they met nobility. Dined in the company of the king, and rescued one of the Duke’s children from bandits. They travelled through lands unknown, uncovering ancient treasures and slaying the beasts that protected them. Sharing found wealth with Clawwood, Salthaven, and other small settlements and towns that had shown them hospitality through their expeditions.
Khaz grew into an able and agile fighter, swift on his feet and quick with a blade.
…and Nomminus couldn’t be more proud of him.
Who began as strangers unexpectedly lumped together, were now family, and they were inseparable.
It came a time in their travels they felt all that could be done in Saurian, they had done. So they bought a small boat and rowed their way across the Great Divide towards the abandoned land.
Morning came ending their fifth night at sea, and as the sun began to rise they reached shore. Getting out of their boat, tired but joyful to feel the sensation of earth once again beneath their feet.
As they grabbed what little gear they brought with them and headed up the beach they were greeted by a strange creature covered in a golden fur. She was short and thin, her body dressed in very little. Just cotton cloth and a shawl that took on a shape similar to wings. Her piercing blue eyes stared at them both. There was a long silence, everyone taking in each others appearances.
Breaking the silence, Nomminus extended her hand towards the new female, who flinched at the gesture.
“It’s alright” Nomminus reassured, hoping there was an understanding in language. “We’re just explorers from across the Great Divide, we mean no harm to you.”
The woman of golden fur takes a few deep breaths, still looking intently upon the two before her. She lifts up her arm up and points towards the sea as she takes a step towards them. “From beyond the water?”
“Yes.” Khaz answers as he pulls back a hood covering his face from the winds they faced on their voyage. Beyond the water, a place called Saurian.”
“Saurian” she repeats, with a sound of wonder in her voice. Turning her head away for a moment “Furless travellers from beyond the sea, three shall bring the end of He…” she mutters under her breath, she returns her gaze quickly to Nomminus and Khaz. “Is there another in your party?” She asks, looking over their shoulders and around them towards their boat, in a sudden burst of excitement.
“No, just us two.” Nomminus responds.
The golden furred female draws back to her original position. “Oh.” She says, her previous excitement for nothing. “You will still be welcomed by my tribe. I will take you to them.” She adds, taking Nomminus and Khaz by a hand and leading them to a large settlement, tents scattered about beach and grassland, all along the edge of a dense forest. “Welcome to the Eo tribe.” She says as they arrive. “I am Shimmering Sands, daughter of Mela Vasa, the leader of this tribe, and peace keeper of Mammalia, I will take you to her.”
Nomminus and Khaz were astounded, seeing such a vast settlement filled with these beings they’d never seen before. It was absolutely incredible. What was once an extension of Saurian had now flourished with new life, under the new name of Mammalia, it was breathtaking. Nomminus was intending to see ash and rubble from the volcano all those years ago, but instead seeing these creatures, these Eohippus, was an unexpected delight, she felt a rush of energy she’d not felt in a while. A whole new place to explore, she was childishly excited about everything she saw.
They were brought before the leader of the tribe. Mela Vasa, she was of a midnight blue pelt, with white spots patterned along her shoulders, arms, and back. Long flowing hair of various vibrant blues, and bright yellow and brown eyes. She wore a short dark grey dress of cool tones, two strips of dark blue fabric ringed around underneath her chest, a cape of the same blue fell at the same length as her dress, and a secondary cape of sorts, made of light blue translucent and airy fabric came around her back to drape over her arms, when unfolded this light blue fabric resembled tattered dragonfly wings. Atop her head she wore a headband with a crooked horn attached to it and pointing forward.
She was motherly and well-spoken, welcoming the travellers and offering them stay with her in her tent. As morning turned to afternoon she took them around the settlement on a tour of sorts, all those in the tribe looking upon these travellers in wonder and surprise.
As the day rolled on, a large feast was prepared and held, as many of the tribe sat in to enjoy good food, and hear of stories told by these strange adventurers.
Khaz was absolutely thrilled to share of his travels, it was one thing to listen to grand stories, but it was another, even greater concept to be the one telling them.
He was so eager to share his stories in fact, that he did most of the telling. Nomminus barely got to speak, but she was completely okay with it as she saw the delight in Khaz’s face as he continued on well into the night.
Once the fires died down to glowing embers, and the food had been polished off plates and bowls, the tribe went to their tents to sleep, carrying young ones already asleep, being careful not to wake them.
Eventually it was only Mela, her daughter, Khaz, and Nomminus left at the tables.
“Mela…if I may ask” Nomminus spoke up, a thought had been in the back of her mind for most of the day, and now that the quiet of night had settled in, she thought it would be a decent enough time to bring it up. “I’ve heard whisper about your camp of a prophecy?”
“Ah, yes, those whispers are referring to an old prophecy our people have held on to for a very long time.” Mela answers, and then leads on to recite it “The beast that slumbers, his tyranny paused, shall awaken once more with sharpened claws. He’ll feast upon us, tis our fate, when generations number Eighty-eight, unless in time heroes do chime, furless travellers from beyond the sea, three shall bring the end of He. The beast of yore and liquid flame, on this land, shall lose his claim.”
A puzzled look shows on Khaz’s face. “So there’s some kind of terrible monster sleeping in a volcano? Who will wake up once you’ve gone through eighty-eight generations, and destroy everything?”
“Unless three heroes from other lands stop him, yes.” Mela confirms, “Our people were hoping to see a third with you, as we’ll be approaching eighty-eight generations within a year or so.”
“While we may not be three in number, we’ll help in whatever way we can should this beast ever decide to show itself.” Nomminus states, they had dealt with large beasts before, this one would hopefully be no different.
Mela nods and smiles “That is all we could ask of you, and I thank you for it, now, the night grows old, we shall retire to my tent for the night. You’ve travelled far and no doubt could use rest.”
What small flames still flicker in the large fire pit nearby were doused with a bucket of water, they returned to Mela’s tent, and fell asleep quickly in the warm and comfy piles of pillows and blankets laid out for them.
