TL;DR: Khaz and Nommy leave Salthaven, and eventually make it to a small town just starting their autumn harvest festival. Khaz meets a friend, and after an unfortunate mishap with a passing stranger, he soon learns more than he was expecting to about his family.
Nomminus and Khaz spend about a week and a half with the giant sauropods of Salthaven, during their stay, they were able to rest and recuperate and have some much needed relaxation after everything that had happened at the mines. Khaz had time to reflect, and had many talks with Nili for hours on end, but she didn’t seem to mind his company at all.
He eventually came to terms with his actions, he slept soundly through the night now, no more horrid dreams to fear. He was more like himself for the most part, but there was a change happening, a good one.
He grew in knowledge and skill while among the giants, they had much to teach him, and he was more than willing to listen and learn. From wise tales warning of great beasts, or how to tell the difference between good plants and poisonous ones, to lessons in better using weapons and tools to aid him in survival in the wilderness.
Quite new still at this whole adventuring thing, but much better off compared to the start of his journey.
When the time came to leave Salthaven, Nili walked with them to the edge of the settlement, and gave them both pouches filled with a trail mix of sorts for the journey ahead.
A strong cool breeze ruffles through the trees and flies past the three, “The winds bring words of changing seasons, should you find your adventures taking you towards the east, the trees around Clawwood will be especially vibrant in a few weeks as autumn falls upon the lands.” Nili says calmly, while she can’t say outright that something awaits them there, it couldn’t hurt to suggest it be a destination.
Nomminus and Khaz hug her and say their final goodbyes, then head off on the next adventure.
Before returning to her place in the settlement, Nili watches, a tear shed though she still smiles. This old dinosaur with her gifts of foresight, she can see that her own days are numbered small, but she was happy to have spent some of them with dear friends.
A few days pass, with not a terrible amount of excitement other than a few strangely large rodents as they pass through a hot boggy swamp. They eventually arrive to Clawwood, a small town just on the edge of a dense forest, one Nomminus even has yet to venture through.
They enter the town, and are greeted by the delightful crisp autumn air, much more welcomed than the humid and rotten smelling air that was breathed in the swamp. The townsfolk pay little mind to the coming visitors, they are all busy with their harvests, and getting ready for the winter that will eventually come. Smells of baked goods and simmering soups pass the noses of our adventurers as they pass through. Sounds of cheers and laughter are soon heard as they come across what looks like a festival of some sort, colourful tents pitched up with merchants selling whatever they can, musicians playing away on lutes, drums, and flutes, while people take breaks from their harvests and have some fun dancing and talking, children run about with wooden swords and helmets, or creating silly dances, trying to outdo each other.
“What a fantastic sight.” Nomminus says with a smile growing across her face.
“Can I go play?” asked Khaz, hopeful that she’d say yes as he mentally got ready to run over and join the fun.
“Of course! We’ll meet back here later, okay?” Nomminus answered, patting him on the back before he ran off towards a group of kids playing tag.
She decided to try and have some fun herself, and made her way towards the stalls, perhaps she could sell the few odd treasures she found about the swamp.
While Khaz ran around with the other kids, he bumped in to one of them, both of them falling backwards on their rumps. Khaz was the first to get back up. “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! Are you okay?” He asked, going over to the other and extending a hand to help her up.
“I’m fine, it takes more than that to hurt me.” Says a young velociraptor, her scales and feathers were varying shades of teal and her eyes a vibrant green. Wearing a dull light green shirt and pants rolled up to her knees. While any other girls around were wearing pretty skirts or dresses. She took his hand and was hoisted up off the ground. “Name’s Pilu, what’s yours?” She asked.
“I’m Khaz, nice to meet you!” he answered. “So what is this festival all about?”
“I thought you looked like you weren’t from around here!” Pilu exclaims. “This is just a big harvest party, it just started a few hours ago, won’t be over until tomorrow night.” She then gets a slightly puzzled look to her face, pulling up her arm, holding her hand at the top of her head and moving it towards Khaz’s to measure their almost identical heights. “Saaayyy…you’re pretty short for a Tyrannosaurus…”
Khaz laughs “Well, maybe you’re just tall for a velociraptor!” noticing he was just a tiny bit shorter than she was.
Pilu laughs as well, pulling her hand back down to her side. “Hey, I like you! You seem alright. Where are you from?”
“Paleo City! … Well, I used to be. Now I travel with my mom-I mean uh…a mentor maybe? Uhm….well she’s a guardian of some sort at least.” Khaz stumbled, a little surprised he’d just called Nomminus his mother…well…she kind of was now technically, but it still felt a little weird to call her that.
Pilu’s eyes lit up, and a grin grew wide on her face. “Wow! That’s a long way from here… my mom used to go there all the time, she always brought me back something to add to my collection, do you want to see it?” Before Khaz had time to answer, she grabbed his hand and ran off with him trying his best to keep up and not trip. As they ran out from the festival, they bumped in to a female raptor with brilliant orange and amber feathers, wearing a white and gold armour, the type of which surprised Khaz as they passed, he’d never seen anything quite like it before. The startled raptor had been carrying a basket of oranges towards the festival, in the sudden appearance of the two children, she dropped the basket, the oranges rolling out into the street, becoming bruised and dirty. Once she made sense of what happened, she noticed the two kids running around the corner of one of the houses. She growled and raised a fisted hand in the air “GET BACK HERE AND CLEAN UP THIS MESS YOU LITTLE BRATS” She yelled out, waiting a few seconds before kneeling down and picking up the fallen fruits herself all while grumbling.
All the commotion caused the local butcher to step outside his shop, wiping his hands on his apron as he watched the aftermath of whatever had just transpired. Looking in the direction to which the raptor was shouting, he noticed the flick of a teal blue tail as it darted around the bend. He could only smile and chuckle softly under his breath while he shook his head, after he proceeded back into his shop.
From down the street and around the corner, Khaz had his back to the wall of a house, while Pilu had hopped up on a barrel, and peeked around the corner back at the troubled raptor.
“Oh gosh I thought she was going to come after us!” Khaz said with a laugh, while trying to catch his breath.
“Yeah, that was probably a close one.” Pilu agreed, “but no time to dwell on that, come on! We’re almost there.”
She hopped off the barrel and took his hand once again, this time at a slightly slower pace, she went to the back door of the house they were just hiding along the side of, and opened it. “Welcome to my house!” She smiled and pulled Khaz in through the door and over to her collection of random things. Most of it little trinkets found, bought, or given to her.
Khaz looked through the collection, eventually stopping at a necklace, a simple silver chain, with a round moonstone pendant. “I…. I’ve seen this one before. My mom had one just like it. She gave it to a friend a long time ago. But we never heard from her after she left.”
Pilu went quiet for a moment. “My mom came home with that after a trip to Paleo city, she gave it to me the night before she died…”
Khaz stood quiet beside Pilu. Both of them looking at the necklace.
A side door to the house creaked as it opened slowly. “Pilu I saw what you – oh…hello there.” Said a red pale red allosaurus with dark red squared splotch markings, as well as vibrant horns above his eyes, and an even brighter neck, He wore a bloodied apron, the local butcher also happened to be Pilu’s step father. He stared at the two children with his golden brown eyes. Recognizing the dusty rose coloured dinosaur. “Khaz?”
Khaz was surprised to hear his name come from this new face. “How do you know who I am?”
The allosaurus came into the room completely and closed the door behind him, he then knelt down to be on level with them. “I used to be friends with your parents, you might not remember me, you were only a toddler when we met, you always used to call me Chompy.”
Chompy… that sounded somewhat familiar. “Well…it’s nice to see you again then, Chompy!”
The allosaurus nodded and laughed slightly. “Nice to see you too, I heard about what happened to your folks, and I’m truly sorry, but….how did you get all the way out to Clawwood? Is there someone taking care of you?”
Khaz was about to answer. “Oh my gosh!” he shouted remembering he’d run off and Nommy was probably looking for him. “Uh…yes! Yes there is, and she’s waiting for me outside. I’ll go get her!”
He ran out the back door and around the corner, up the street over to the festival, seeing Nommy waiting where she said she would. “Nommy! You have to come quick!” He called as he ran up to her, somewhat frantic.
“What is it? Are you alright?” Nomminus asked, as Khaz grabbed her hand and tugged her back to Pilu’s house.
“I met a friend! And her dad knew my parents, you have to come meet them!” Khaz explained, pulling her along until they got back to the house.
The meeting was awkward at first, but as the day turned into night, the conversation drew on. Both kids and adults getting to know each other, and Khaz’s situation. The little ones ended up falling asleep eventually, while Nomminus and Chompy continued to speak in hushed voices, she hadn’t known any of the details of the story other than the murder until now, and he told her everything, since she was now Khaz’s guardian, he felt it was information she needed to hear, despite how disheartening some of it was.
