Gonna be posting these for the next while, been waiting to upload them once I had a break in commissions long enough so I could get all the chapters finished and posted in order on here :) there will be 16 chapters. I've been using this as a means to practice drawing full scenes, and to renew and practice writing skills that have been left abandoned for a long time.
"Saurian" is the title, and also the name of the world in which it takes place.
The main characters Nomminus and Khaz are an unlikely duo, she's an adventurer, always on the move and prefers a solitary life. He is a bright-eyed and excitable kid who ends up tagging along with her on her adventures due to unfortunate circumstances.
They will learn to work together as they deal with whatever dangers or challenges they might face while wandering the world.
"So where are we off to now?" piped the little red tyrannosaur. "A bandit hideout? An ancient tomb? How about haunted ruins?"
Nomminus gazed blankly at the path ahead, normally she'd think nothing of those suggestions, in fact she was already thinking of places they could go, and getting excited at the thought of adventure. But she halted her mind's wandering -he's just a child, all of that is too dangerous for him- she tried to think of other things they could do, that is more family-friendly, but the list was quite short. She remembered the small pack she kept tucked under her armour, a package she was supposed to deliver for an old man she met on her travels.
"We are going on a mail delivery." Nomminus finally answered.
"Awwh...a delivery? But there's no bad guys to fight on a delivery." pouted the boy.
"Oh don't be so sure, there's...well there's spiders, nasty ones too." Nommy smiled.
"Spiders?! Cool! How big?!"
"Oh big ones, small ones, some as big as your head." she laughs.
The boy would stop in his tracks, feel his hands around his head, then carefully move them away to see the size. "Woah...that's big." He said excitedly.
They would walk in silence for a few minutes, until the boy piped up again.
"Soooo, why do we have to deliver someone's mail?"
"I met an old man along the way during my travels, he has a brother near by this settlement, he runs a cabbage farm, but the old man was quite weak, and was having trouble making his way here. I offered to act as a guide, but he asked me to go on ahead, and deliver a letter he had wrote to his brother. So that it might get there before he does." Nomminus answered.
"Ooohhh...okay!" said the boy in understanding.
They walked a few more minutes in silence, when the boy would open his mouth again to most likely ask another question. But Nomminus stopped him before he could.
"I have a question for you instead." she started. "If we are to adventure together, I'd like to know your name."
"Khaz." the boy answered. "My name is Khaz."
"Well then, Khaz, I....-" Nomminus would pause. "I need you to duck."
Before the boy could question why, Nomminus shoved him down quickly, as she took out a match and a stick, using the former to light the latter. She went a few feet ahead, a giant spider, around the same size as her was headed their way, she approached the spider, torch pointed forward, the spider moved away from the fire, as she coaxed it off the main path and a fair ways out, before dousing the stick in a nearby pond, and heading back once she knew the spider wouldn't follow. She helped the boy up once she returned.
"And some spiders as big as me apparently." She spoke with a slight laugh.
Khaz was quite surprised by what had all just happened, but didn’t seem scared by it.
“You didn’t kill it?” he asked.
“Why would I? it didn’t mean harm, it was only passing through, had I not redirected it though, it may have attacked, I don’t think you’re ready for a fight just yet, but we’ll work on it.” Nomminus answered.
As they wandered further down the road, more and more questions came from the child, Nomminus of course having to answer every single one, followed by three or four “Why’s?” despite having to answer so many questions, she found having someone to talk to was pleasant at the least. She began wondering if this whole thing might work out after all.
Eventually they arrived at a small cabbage farm. Nomminus delivered the letter to the brother and they entered into a bit of a conversation, Khaz got bored and lost focus on the task at hand, it was done after all it seemed, so he began to play with the farmer’s dog. A big hound covered in stringy grey hair. Despite his raggedy appearance, the dog was energetic and playful, considerate enough to not roughhouse too much to possibly injure the child.
The commotion of barking and laughter would catch the ears of the old man and Nomminus. “He yer’s?” asked the farmer.
“No, though I suppose I have become his guardian.” Answered the blue scaled adventurer
“Well then he’s yers!” piped up the old farmer. “Just ‘cause he aint flesh and blood to ya, doesn’t mean he can’t be yer’s. He seems like he’s a fine boy, he’ll grow up well if ya teach him right.”
Nomminus nodded. “I suppose you’re right, and yes I hope so.” She said, looking over at the boy once more, she’d never expected to be a parent, she never really wanted to, that’s why she started adventuring, to get away from any commitments to that sort of thing…well that and life was boring otherwise. But, well it seemed the inevitable task of parenthood had finally found her, in a way she certainly wasn’t expecting. Hopefully she’ll be decent at it.
The conversation soon ended and Nomminus collected the boy, had him say good bye to his new furry friend, and they then continued onwards, night would eventually fall and they’d come across a hunter’s camp, where he offered to share spare sleeping bags with them. Khaz would share all of his big adventure plans, while the two adults simply laughed, amazed at how much he’d come up with. Nomminus then pulls out a map and unfolds it. “I suppose, since this is your first time out, you can pick where you’d like to go.” The map was tattered but still legible, it had many marks in different places, quick notes too. Accounting different places Nommy had already been, or was planning to go to.
TL:DR; Nommy learns the boy’s name: Khaz, she wards off a large spider as they walk to find an old farmer to which she promised to deliver a letter to, Nomminus realizes parenthood is scary, they meet up with a hunter, who shares his tent for the night, and Khaz gets to pick where to go for his first adventure.
