I still can't decide if the real Eddie would laugh, cry, or sue me for this.
As of late, I've really taken an interest in Van Halen and much of their music. I've heard all about their history by now, and I can certainly say I'm a fan of all three eras that they've had over the years. (Yes, even Gary Cherone's.) The thing that strikes me the most about Van Halen is Eddie's blistering guitar work; Having been mostly a fan of the Beatles and Queen up until recently, I've never heard anything like him. Songs like Eruption, Hot For Teacher, Runaround, Humans Being, Dirty Water Dog and One I Want have shown me that Eddie Van Halen is guaranteed to go down in history as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, despite his... "questionable"... personality off-stage.
So being the Lion King fan that I am, I soon took notice of Eddie having nearly the same name as Ed did, and for a while it was just a funny thought in the back of my head. But one thought led to another, and since I wanted to draw a tribute to Eddie's talents on here, it ultimately led to this. This was my first attempt at drawing a hyena, and by God was it a pain in the ass to get it down. I don't know what it is, something about hyenas are just so much harder to draw than the lions/lionesses are. Maybe it's just because I'm not used to it, who knows? Getting the Frankenstein (the name of the famous guitar here) to look right wasn't quite as hard as I initially thought, but god damn, guitars are tough to draw. But I'm generally proud with how it turned out, despite the admittedly weird context. But hey, who wouldn't get a good laugh at the thought of Ed just busting out into playing Eruption here, eh?

Well, I was looking through the TLK movies again to see if there were any funny or out-of-context screenshots I could mess with in Photoshop, I stopped on the part where Zira says "And once we have Simba alone....", and the way she had her paw in that shot almost made it look like she could be made to look like she was holding something. I figured it would be funny to make her look like she was reaching up a guitar neck and playing it, since her paw/arm looked to be in about the right spot for that. Being the Van Halen fan I am, the Frankenstein was my guitar of choice for her. It was part of my inspiration to make the Ed drawing after that.
Yes and no. Yes because, yeah, that guitar was in the movie. But also no, because the Cool Cat movie wasn't where it originally came from. The guitar seen in the movie was actually a replica of the real guitar that Eddie Van Halen used back in the 1970s and the early 80s. It's known as the Frankenstein, and it's the most famous one he's ever had, just from the paint job alone. That's why Ed has it here.
