Cage smiled bright and wide as he stepped into the living room. He set down his suitcase and held his arms wide; just in time to be forcefully greeted by his wife. Her long yellow hair hung down, freshly damp from a shower. Wet drops stained her satin nightgown. "Welcome home my love~" as she smiled, her whole face seemed to beam like sunlight to Cage's tired eyes.
"i missed you so much" he cooed, pressing his lips to hers, as he slid his arms behind her back. Holding her tight as if he never wanted to let her go.
"Then why did you let me die?" She asked, her voice so delicate and loving, he almost didn't notice what she said. "W..what?!" Cage's heart raced, skipping to what felt like a hundred miles an hour. The foundation of the quaint little home began to shatter, gaping red chasms making there way through the floor, rapidly gaining on him and his wife "CASSY COME ON!" His reflex took over as he pulled at her arm, away from the hole, only to trip and fall from surprised lack of resistance.
In his hand was his wives detached hand; slowly turning to cinders under his touch. Tears streamed down his face in adrenaline pumped fear, as he watched cassy's entire frame turn grey, shrivel, and burn before falling into the volcanic abyss.
Cage lept up from his cot with a start, his breathing fast and heavy, cold sweat soaked his clothes. Panic stricken he looked around the room and at himself while trying to catch his breath. Seeing a thin coating of ash over his once forest camouflaged clothes only made him panic again; until a dog bolted in from the next room over to see if his master was okay. The yellow lab's fur was almost entirely drowned out by ash. The dog lovingly rubbed against cage's hand, unable to lick him through the gas mask that was fitted around his muzzle. The touch seeming to bring cage back to reality "oh, hey buddy" he breathed loudly, before leaning back into the cot.
"Just a dream, again.." Cage gently stroked buddy's fur, ash sticking to his glove; while he reached his other hand down to grab his pack off the floor.
He hefted it to his chest, so he could rummage through for what he was looking for. A single bottle of water. "..shit" he muttered. Thoughts of keeping it to himself crossed his mind; until he looked over. Buddy was sitting, happily looking up at cage with his bright blue eyes. "Alright, 50/50" cage murmured quietly. Fishing out a dog bowl, and pouring half of the bottle into it, before helping buddy lift the mask enough to drink.
Buddy happily lapped up the bowl, desperation teaching him well on how to spill much less than other dogs. Cage let out a soft sigh, watching the dog thirstily drink up. A sort of relief went through him, as he thought of what would have happened, if he wasn't there to help the dog survive. "Guess im not a total failure.." He whispered, taking only a sip of the bottle, before pouring the rest into the dog bowl.
Cage stayed quiet, not saying another word, as he donned his own mask, preparing himself for another day of the new harsh world. Waiting patiently for buddy to finish every drop, before bagging the bowl and empty bottle "sorry big guy, but i have to do it" he whispered getting to his knees as he struggled to return the dogs mask to proper position. Despite the whines, whimpers and struggles, he finally got it back on.
Buddy rolled onto his back, as if showing his defeat. "Come on buddy, lets go. We need to find more water, and soon." Cage patted his leg, signaling buddy to heel. Obediently he hopped up and ran to his masters side.
Cage took one more glance into the home they spent the night at, before opening the door to the outside world. Immediately greeted by ashfall so thick, he could barely see a few feet infront of his face "stay close buddy." He said, patting his hip again. Buddy barked in response.
Cage slowly took each step, burrowing his boots into the ash, stomping to gage the material underfoot, until he felt the familiar thud of asphalt. "You remember which direction we came from buddy?"
"Bark!"
"Right. Dumb question"
Cage closed his eyes, taking a couple deep breaths of filtered air, before taking a hunch, and following the road to what he believed was west.
Every few feet he continued to gage the substance below his feet, kicking up mounds of ash into his already minimal field of view. With nothing but the howling of wind to break the eerie silence, Cage fell to his thoughts. Memories of watching the news the day the bombs fell, seeing the initial destruction, wondering how it could get worse, and then seeing the earths plates rupture from the explosions, volcanos along every tectonic line. He wasn't even sure if the ash infront of him was from the bombs or the volcanos at this point.. And then he remembered.. Cages heart picked up as he tensed up, shaking himself free of the memories. "BARK BARK BARK!" Yapped buddy at his side; somehow aware of what was going on.
"Th.. Thanks buddy." Cage shook his head again. "Fuck, i cant even tell if were passing houses or not in this mess-!" Cage was thrown out of his train of though, by his boot catching on a lip of uneven road, throwing him off his balance and bringing his world to a screeching halt, as his head bashed against the asphalt.
A peaceful inky emptiness was all that infected Cage's mind, until he was jolted awake by the feeling of a hand trying to remove his mask. Entirely out of reflex Cage swung his fist. It connected with whoever found him, throwing the figure off of him with the forceful connection
